Ford used the Mustang name on the Mach-E electric SUV. However, there was a much simpler way to increase sales and profits: make a Lincoln version of the famous 5.0 pony. It's a crazy idea, but it will begin to make sense in a moment.

Over the years, we've seen a lot of cases where making two of the same car is great. For example, Nissan had the 350Z while Infiniti had the G35 Coupe. It sounds like there would be some overlap, but we've seen fans so loyal that they own both. Also, Chrysler really shot itself in the foot when it stopped offering crazy Hemi V8s. Who says people won't want a 300C and a Charger?

Ford is no stranger to yielding platforms and engines to Lincoln. There's currently a lot of it going on in the SUV and crossover segment. However, Lincoln might benefit from two additions to its range - a muscle car and a pickup truck.

Obviously, trucks are booming right now, and Ford still has the sales crown. But where GM shares the burden between the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra, the F-150 is left to fight alone. In 2002, Lincoln made its first truck, the Blackwood.

It was a massive sales flop, but research showed Lincoln owners also had trucks at home. So they tried again with the Mark LT, which made its debut in 2006. Offered with a short-bed crew cab and 5.4-liter V8, it ultimately also failed because it was seen as nothing more than an F-150 with a new face.

Do Lincoln owners also have Mustangs? They might. The GT500 is one of the fastest ponies ever built, not to mention quite the looker. But the following rendering by wb.artist20 suggest an alternative appearance, one that's more of a cruiser coupe. This is a revised version of a car he created earlier, dubbed the Thoroughbred because the name usually implies an expensive racehorse.

Back in the 60's, Mercury (another Ford variant) had the Cougar. In the 1980's, there was the Mercury Capri. Both were based on the Mustang chassis and had the same power trains.

Recently, with the announcement of a second model based on the Mach-E, the rumor has been a return of the Cougar and/or Capri for Lincoln.

Time will tell.

BTW, there's been other renders of Lincoln "Mustangs" in the past so this is not a new thing.

Why not use the Thunderbird name?
I like the Thunderbird, since it was small first, then became a "land yacht" in the 1970s. In the 1980s it return as a sports car again and won races. The 2000s version was too small. The Continental name is reserved for a larger sedan. So what other name can be designated for Lincoln'S first electric?

You have a point there. The Thunderbirds that followed the 2 seaters in 1957 had back seats and seated 4. That artist rendition works for that. The Thunderbird was a “cruising” car and not a “ muscle” car so the Lincoln genre would go better with the idea of a cruiser even if it doesn’t have a Ford badge. You don’t want another land yacht (1970’s) when they would be trying to electrify the car

The 2002-2005 Thunderbird was made specifically to be a retro version of the 1955-57 Thunderbirds so it wasn’t too small at all. The people that bought one (myself included) WANTED a 2 seated retro Bird. I had an additional sentimental reason in that my Grampa Walt bought one of the first 1955 Thunderbirds in Detroit and came home to Minnesota to show it off when my mother was a young girl. We have a picture of him sitting in the car top down waiving to my Gramma and the kids. It was fire engine red just like my Torch Red.

The car was no different then the market for other 2 seated cars. I think one of the things that really “sunk” the retro Thunderbirds was the “price gouging” by the dealers on the car. It listed for around $40,000 (in 2001/2002 which would be a whole lot more in today’s dollars) and some people paid $5 to $10 thousand over MSRP. Like now with our Mustangs, people were preordering a year ahead of time but unlike now, the price gouging was going on big time. I’ve heard of some dealers charging over MSRP but it isn’t rampant like it was then.

That version of the Thunderbird was severely under powered. It looked real nice since it was a retro mid 1950s model but it just did not cut it on the open road.
It was meant to be a cruiser and NOT a hot rod! The V-8 was small however but most of us who bought the car wanted to be seen in it and NOT race in it. I seem to remember that it was a 252 HP engine in my 2002 which is small. The car DID “cut it” on the open road as those of us who bought one knew why we did! The following years the displacement was larger. At one of our Thunderbird conventions (Maggie Valley) one person brought a turbo V-8 configured model but Ford never picked up on it and the interest there wasn’t real great. I still regret selling mine as I miss the feeling of cruising with it top down in nice weather and all the admiring stares I got around town.

I think Cougar has a different connotation nowadays. So I don’t see that happening.
you never know it might have a special following. ;)

Because that’s a Ford nameplate and not a Lincoln?
From an earlier post I made:
"so the Lincoln genre would go better with the idea of a cruiser even if it doesn’t have a Ford badge"

I agree with you there. And Mark had a point that Cougar (a Mercury nameplate) is closer to Lincoln.
