You are absolutely correct;

The cheapest is to drive the car into the ground, until it breaks down on the side of the road after 25 years and 250,000 miles.

However some of us want to drive hassle free, fix our costs, want the latest safety features and the greatest reliability.

Those are my priorities: I want to drive only a car covered by the manufacturer's warranty. For me the most efficient use of my money is to lease.

FYI, assuming 10,000 miles per year on an ICE, if you take "use of money" into consideration at just 4% and sales tax, the break even owning vs. leasing point is between 6 and 7 years. In other words to be cheaper, you must keep the car a minimum of 6 years. After 6 years owning is cheaper than leasing.

The problem to me at least, is driving a six year old car with six year old safety features.

I have not done the calculations for the MME, because at this time the residuals and interest rates on a lease are unknown and depreciation is unknown.
Do you mean to tell me every 6 years there are groundbreaking new safety features on a car?
I think this comes out next year you might wanna wait then.

Absolutely:

Volvo was the first with seat belts. It took GM, Ford and Chrysler 10 years.
Mercedes was the first with ABS.
Air bags were originally just driver side.

Lane Centering, adaptive cruise control, emergency braking did not exist four years ago.

EV's four years ago, other than Econoboxes were Tesla Model S and X. Now we have 15 to 20 EV's to choose from.

Technology in cars follow, to a certain extent, Moore's law.

I am leasing becausr i am self employed and can pass the lease and taxes every month, plus my car is my second office. If I see nothing that interests me after the 4 years ill buy it back. I know its more expensive to lease but losing a day for repairs and having the fixed cost in expenses is worth it. I still have to respect my budget so we'll see what happens on delivery day.

I live in SoCal and drive 25,000 a year up and over the mountains to get to LA. In an ice vehicle after 100,000 miles warranty or not I do NOT want to be or my wife and daughter stuck in the dark possibly without cell service waiting for a tow truck.

however now with a BEV I feel that is no longer the case ESPECIALLY with OTA. I figure I am good for a minimum of 250,000 miles. Safety features are not likely to be dramatic over the next 6 years. Battery length and new stuff like autonomous driving is more likely. All of these will be available for a subscription fee on OTA. The ONLY reason to trade in an MME in 3 years is because you want the new Shelby/Rousch version or a change of color.

Or if there is a major change in efficiency or range. It's probably one one of the reasons Ford wont want ppl to lease. If after 4 years there is a big change then they know the cars returned wont hold its value.

Aren't you getting $8000 with Ford Options as opposed $6000 with a lease? Or am I misunderstanding how the Quebec rebate program works?

In three years, battery range will have crossed 400 miles. It's like Nickel Cadmium power tools, Lith ion changed the game and brushless motors etc. Three years ago when I backed up into my wife's car, the cars crunched. Today, her Murano stops before I back into the Huge Planter with a Palm in it. Yes in both cases I should have been more careful, but safety tech I'm her Murano has my back. Pun intended!

Or maybe some form of sentient self preservation, and not for your back, but for it's own.

We get it regardless of lease or finance. The lease needs to be 48months in order to get 8000cdn$. The real criteria is the maximum cost of the vehicle. Also I have a maximum lease amount i can pass in my expenses. The government accepts up to 800$ monthly for leases as expenses.
