Will downloads still update whilst driving? Or do we need to be stationary in an open area

Depends on the update. Some updates can be installed while the car is in use. In those situations the car uses an AB module system where there are 2 of certain modules and one is updated while the other is in use. Then when you turn the car off the remaining module is updated.

Other updates that impact modules that do not have a duplicate require the car to be off and not driven until the update is complete. Those are the updates that follow the schedule you set and it will warn you that the update is going to happen at the set time.

Great! Thank you

Do not apply updates while driving, that's a bad idea. Most won't let you do this.

Updates will download in the background while driving. It's automatic and you don't need to do anything.

Only apply updates after you've parked, preferably at home in case something goes wrong.

Does it count as ā€˜driving’ for the purposes of downloading an OTA if I start my car and change the settings to not turn off after 30 minutes, turn off E-heat and leave the key in the car while it is on? I can leave locked in my garage so not a security risk. Just had a hernia operation and won’t be driving for 4 weeks. A load of OTA updates have just been released in the UK for MY21 and I’m keen to get them downloaded. I tried it earlier, started with 87% SoC on the HVB and left running for 3 hours. Still had 87% SoC when I got back in the car and it was still on!

Yes, it will work. When an non-inhibit OTA is sent to a vehicle, the owner has 7 days to turn the vehicle on to allow the update process to start. You would want to start it at least once every 6 days to make sure you don't miss that window.
