As part of our regular review of the long-term technology roadmap, we now believe that the availability of next-generation FMCW lidar is less essential to our roadmap for eyes-off systems. This decision was based on a variety of factors, including substantial progress on our EyeQ6-based computer vision perception, increased clarity on the performance of our internally developed imaging radar, and continued better-than-expected cost reductions in third-party time-of-flight lidar units.

Basically, they don't need to spend money on R&D of lidar if off-the-shelf options are just as capable as what they've been developing.

I don't know about following Tesla's lead. Autopilot is pretty bad IMO. Once you've tried Hyundai/Kia HDA2 and BMW's DAPP or BlueCruise... you realize how autopilot systems don't need to constantly disengage.

The new Tesla Vision that shows parking spots and 3D surround vision is cool but the 3/Y still need USS for close proximity detection. FYI I've test driven the new Cybertruck and M3P with them.

Hands-free is half the equation.

HDA2 and DAPP allows for driver input and auto-lane changes since 2021/2022. BC only added auto lane change recently (2 years later) and it does work great.

Tesla's AP would disengage the second you touched the wheel or had something brush too closely.

And SupeCruise should be on the list. It's hands-free and I think it even changes lane without input.

SuperCruise like Rivian's Driver+ doesn't work on local streets.

At least with BC and HDA/HDA2 and Autopilot - there are options for auto lane centering cruise on local roads.

I'd also include BlueCruise with the constant disengagement. We have a grand total of 3 roads in Metro Vancouver that we can use hands-free BC with, and it SUCKS! I'll have it randomly COMPLETELY disengage not only the hands free, but shut off all lane keep assist randomly without warning on completely straight stretches of highway with no traffic around, gentle overcast, clean windshield, and clean roads with clear lines. I have a 2023.5 with BC1.3.

I was just on a road trip that was Hands-Free mapped for 95% of the journey. Vancouver to Kamloops on Hwy 1/Hwy 5. Theoretically I should have been able to be hands-free to the entire trip length until I took the exit in Kamloops, but I spent more time having to "take over" from Hands Free BC than I was able to spend hands free. BC is not able to handle anything more than a gentle curve before disengaging, which doesn't work when going through mountains, even on a divided 4 lane motorway. Yes, the map provided by Ford that shows the Mapped Roads, covers 95% of the limited-access highways I was on. The lane-keep in my old 2021 VW GLI could handle more curves before yelling at me. The FSD (Supervised) with the 2024 Model 3 handled the exact same road much better.

Also the FSD (Supervised) works in the rain, Blue Cruise does not, which isn't all that great given I live in a rainforest.

If you don’t have curve control (or whatever ford calls it) you absolutely do NOT have “BlueCruise 1.3”. It’s an integral part of the system. I don’t care if you tell me Bill Ford personally came to your house and installed software from his own MacBook Pro ?

I have the scooting aside and auto lane change feature. It also no longer hugs the right side of the lane as much. I know it's a frankenbuild with FDRS + Forscan, but it's as close to 1.2/1.3 as a '21 gets.

EDIT: Maybe I just drive like an old man and I'm not giving BC a chance to slow down or I'm slowing down needlessly ?

Hyundai doesn’t offer hands free in the US. I think they might offer it in Korea though.

Rivian has stated it’s on their roadmap would be included with the new Rivian Autonomy Platform.

BMWs highway assistant offers hands free on highways (up to 85mph now, used to just be stop and go up to 40). I’m not sure if it’s limited to mapped highways or more general like Tesla.

I can’t confirm this right now for logistical reasons, but I’m pretty sure there’s a toggle someplace in sync for “predictive curve assist” or something like that.

SuperCruise does do fully automatic lane changes, works on two lane highways, and even works hands free when towing. It handles most interchanges and predicts the target speed for curves very well. It does not have hands on lane keeping on local streets, only adaptive cruise. It has way more mapped miles than Ford has.
