SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA EDISON, FORD TO REWARD ELECTRIC VEHICLE OWNERS WHO SUPPORT THE GRID
SEP 10, 2024 | DEARBORN, MICH.

Ford Mustang Mach-E SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA EDISON, FORD TO REWARD ELECTRIC VEHICLE OWNERS WHO SUPPORT THE GRID 1725992493346

Today, Ford became the first automaker to participate in a new program that offers Southern California electric vehicle customers compensation for reducing their home energy use during times when the electric grid is most strained. Ford's California Power Response program, offered in partnership with Olivine ClimateResponse® VPP, allows Ford customers to further realize the benefits of driving electric and the value an electric vehicle lifestyle can bring.

Besides benefitting from easy and convenient home charging, Ford customers can now enroll to receive financial benefits by allowing Ford to automatically pause their electric vehicle charging during peak demand periods, with the ability to override the pause if they need to charge sooner. Customers will earn $1/kWh of energy reduced during the peak demand events. To register, eligible customers can follow instructions on the following link.

For more information on the collaboration and program, please see Southern California Edison's press release here.

No, thank you.
The state of California is desperate to get everyone on these plans. They have gotten the power companies, thermostat manufacturers and now Ford to help push acceptance.

Ever since the phone app update I cannot see my home location or make changes despite resetting the phone and the 12v battery. Applying this program requires home location which is not detected at the Ford site.

Wow USD$ 1 per kwh is pretty big money. I'd sign up.
That tells you how desperate they are to put a band aid on the electricity grid issue.

Of course we have to wonder where the $$ is coming from to bribe BEV owners not to charge their cars during those times.

Always read the fine print:

**To receive the incentive, you must:
  1. Reduce your home’s overall energy consumption while participating in at least 3 grid events through October 31, 2024. Ford will pause charging during grid events to help reduce your home’s energy consumption.
  2. Plug in and charge your vehicle at least 3 times per week at your enrolled home location.
So, what if one of these weeks I only charge twice? And this only runs through October? Sounds like a lot of work to (maybe**) make a little bit of money.

I would expect most of us in SoCal already schedule our charging during off-peak hours - 6 hours every weeknight and 14 hours overnight Fri-Sat and Sat-Sun. Not hard to do.

I get the hesitation, but for the vast majority of people having this sort of behind the scenes management of electricity demand will never get in the way. A long distance commuter may use 30% charge every day. So you plug it in when you get home and in the morning it's charged... do you really care about what hours that happened? Especially if you can override it when needed.

Letting grid operators shed the these loads is game changing for the people that make sure your house can be cooled and dinner can be cooked. These types of programs are crucial to protect the grid and give us time to make the improvements necessary to deal with the increased demand that EVs will drive.

(FWIW, I have a dumb thermostat [programmable, but not connected to the internet] specifically because I expect the grid to let me at least be comfortable, so if CA is trying to manage that, ew... but if the grid needs me to charge for 1-4am instead of 10-2; I'll see you at 6 on the commute either way )

I am not in California; that being said, are not most of you guys already charging at "off-peak" times? My car is set to charge between Midnight and 6am when connected to my home charger. If you are charging at Peak hours, are you not paying more?

ps. I don't see Georgia offering this type of program. But that's why GA's economy is not in the crapper.

I’m not on demand pricing in Virginia but I expect it’s coming. They replaced my meter with a smart one last year.

Here’s a case from SC showing what’s in store. This guy is fully prepared for it and still has to plan carefully.

I don't know where you live in GA, but if you are an EMC customer, you may want to check with them to see if they have a peak program.
I have a program that runs only in the summer months (Memorial Day - Labor Day, weekends & holidays excluded) that gives me a lower rate off peak I.E. 3 PM - 8 PM. All other hours/months throughout the year are at the lower rate. Obviously I charge the MME after 8 PM year round just to make it simple.

NorCal here and my car is set to charge whenever I plug it in. I use my dumb EVSE to set a delay most days, but when I want a charge to happen I skip pushing that button. It’s an easy button push that happens as I am removing the cable end from its holster, so it takes zero extra seconds. ?‍♂?

Which is cheaper? Build new sources of power or reschedule existing uses of the system.
