I finally got the Bluecruise 1.3 update! It only took three months and then 95 minutes to install!

I work in software, and I'm not sure why an update would take 95 minutes to install in 2024. 9.5 minutes? Sure, maybe. But even a heavily bloated operating system like Windows shouldn't take this long to install. Incidentally, Ford is using Linux, but I don't know their vendor distribution.

I have installed plenty of things on Linux that take longer…..

But what is the amount of time it should take when you have no idea what the infrastructure is?

There are a number of individual systems that are made by Ford and partners. Also, I don’t know how they do checksum or where, but software integrity would be expected. We also know they check for conditions in addition to the LVB and some conditions get set to make the system they want to patch active. All this powered by what is likely to be a 5-year-old smartphone processor.

Years ago, I learned that fast is meaningless if the customer can’t use the product.

And then there are software updates over a not so fast CAN bus.
Kbts/s perhaps?

IPMA updates reflect this, if I'm not mistaken.

The process more similar to flashing firmware than updating an operating system. The IPMA has a lot of blocks to be written to, and the files are multiple gigabytes in size. So it does take a few minutes. Some modules can only be flashed as fast as the data bus allows, which is less than 1 Mbps in some cases.

What install on Linux takes longer than 95 minutes? I can create an entire six-node Kubernetes cluster in less than 40 minutes.

I've wiped/flashed plenty of systems with updated firmware, and it's never taken even close to 95 minutes.

Sure, that would make sense if it were 2007, but it's not. We live in a time of fast NVME drives, fast CPUs, and the Linux kernel is faster than ever.

There isn’t just one “computer” that needs to be updated. There are a bunch of hardware modules that need to be flashed.
Regardless, it shouldn't take 95 minutes to apply a software update in 2024.

Your car is missing the extreme RGB lighting package that makes it install faster.

Might as well sell it, clearly it’s trash.

That was a time estimate. I have observed an update done in my Mach E taking far less time than estimated on the screen. Unless you actually know the actual update time, I would take that estimate with a grain of salt.

I am an IT guy and the updates just feel sloppy (descriptions and communications). I got power up 6.8.0 a couple of days ago. It said it would take 23 minutes. It wanted to schedule but I pressed 'update now'. I sat in my car while it updated and it took about 3 minutes

I think the OP may not realize that this is apples v.s. oranges. We're talking oranges but he's thinking apples. Sure, I agree that [even if it took] 95 minutes to update any system seems like a long time. But most firmware/SW upgrade updates are to one, or just a few, apps and that wouldn't take as long as updating, checksum, validating post update checks, etc. MANY modules. Some/most of which are safety related and need to be checked thoroughly before the updates are completed. I don't mind waiting (patiently) in my home for 95 minutes, while the car completes the process, especially for such a long awaited update. This is much ado about nothing, imho.
