SSM 51137 - 2021-2022 Mustang Mach-E/Escape PHEV, 2020-2022 Aviator PHEV, 2022 Transit BEV - Illuminated Powertrain Malfunction (Wrench) Indicator And/Or MIL With SOBDM DTC U3000:49

Some 2021-2022 Mustang Mach-E/Escape plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV), 2020-2022 Aviator PHEV, and 2022 Transit battery electric vehicle (BEV) vehicles may experience an illuminated powertrain malfunction (Wrench) indicator and/or malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) with secondary on board diagnostic control module(SOBDM) diagnostic trouble code (DTC) U3000:49. This may be due to an internal SOBDM concern. To correct the concern, replace the SOBDM following Workshop Manual, Section 414-03B Removal and Installation, Secondary On-board Diagnostic Control Module. For claiming use base part # 10B689 and the applicable labor operations of Section 10 of the Service Labor Time Standards (SLTS) Manual.

----End SSM----

SOBDM U3000:49 - Control Module: Internal Electronic Failure - This DTC sets if the SOBDM detects an internal component failure.

When powered on, the SOBDM performs an internal self tests and monitors the operation of internal components including DC voltage/current sensor and the AC voltage/current sensor. If an SOBDM internal component failure occurs DTC U3000:49 sets. Presence of this DTC illuminates the Charger Service Required indicator in the IPC and results in the CSI (Charge Status Indicator) flashing a fault pattern and the vehicle will not charge.

Basically, this is the code that means your on-board AC charger has failed. You will no longer be able to L1 or L2 charge. You might be able to DCFC but I wouldn't count on it. Drive to the nearest Ford EV dealer or call a tow truck if you won't make it. Do not run the battery all the way down below 5-10% since it cannot be recharged until the on-board charger (SOBDM) is replaced.

Note: Code U3000:49 may exist in other modules, this SSM is specific to the code being present in the SOBDM, not other modules.

Well it took a few years to show up in my '21, but this fault happened to me a couple of weeks ago while driving cross-country in very hot weather. I rented a car to continue our family road trip and left the car with the very capable people at AutoNation Ford Wolfchase near Memphis. I just picked it back up today, apparently working well.
