I had the chance to go to Joshua Tree with my Mach-E this weekend. I thought the rapid red was really popping in the desert. Surprisingly, I didn’t see a single other Mach-E the entire time in the park. I would definitely go again with the Mach-E, EA charging was very smooth. In the end, the pictures don’t do the park justice.

Joshua Tree really is a beautiful place. I'd love to drive there in my Mach-E, but it's so far from home.

I had the opportunity to rent this little thing when visiting LA one time and had a blast!

You know there were a lot of Mustangs especially convertibles that I saw, it’s really the right place for it outside the summer months.

With the twisty roads around there especially heading down towards Phoenix, it's a great place if you're a car person as much as a nature person.

You're making me wish I has an excuse to go back right now lol

Yes! I thought the same thing. I decided to enter the park from the south entrance and not only were there great twists, there was nobody around. I’d never heard of Joshua Tree being a great driving road, but that first stretch from the 10 to the Cottonwood Visitor Center was really something.

I would love to go there in “Rosie” my Rapid Red AWD Mach but as I live in the UK it’s a bit too far to drive!

Around 250 miles and 3.5 hours if you enter from the closer to you southern entrance, and add maybe 50 miles and an hour for the return trip.

What's the charging situation at and around Joshua Tree?

The Coachella Valley (Palm Springs, Palm Desert, and Indio) and Cabazon have the closest EA stations. I started my morning at 100% charge on my AWD Standard Range Mach-E (211 miles EPA range) in Palm Desert.

I entered the park from the south entrance, exited at the west entrance, and charged in Redlands, CA on my way back to Los Angeles in the evening. I reached the Redlands EA station with 18% battery left, and this station is a bit further than the Coachella Valley or Cabazon EA stops, so I would say charging is not a problem, so long as you have a decently high state of charge going into Joshua Tree.

EDIT: Here’s a map of the route.

Phoenix is a great starting point for many beautiful drives and day hikes within the state. Lots of great scenic drives in southern Utah and New Mexico, too.

Unfortunately for now, I find it less stressful to take an ICE vehicle for the scenic road trips. I probably should've gotten the extended range Mach-E.

Joshua Tree National Park is easily doable, though, since it's just off of I-10. Here's my trip log from a couple years ago:

I have the same vehicle. I'm pretty sure it's 224 miles EPA range at optimum temps. I'm guessing it was hot and you lost some miles, no?

I have a 2021, I think they revised the range for the 2022 and 2023s. Actually now that I think about it, I think they released extra battery capacity that was held back as a buffer on the 2021s via software update to get the equivalent range.

I will say, I arrived home in LA with 68% charge, and as mentioned, I had 18% charge when I stopped at EA in Redlands. That means I needed 114% charge for this trip. If I wasn’t powering up the inclines and instead driving more modestly on the freeway, perhaps I could have made that trip if I was really in a bind without the Redlands EA stop. Adding my home would have brought the total miles traveled to around 230 miles.
