YES! THIS! I believe they unlock but then lock again when the lift gate closes. I believe this is the case. I can test this by leaving the key fob on the ground as another has suggested.

I understand that there are little drain holes, but I am concerned about other stuff getting in there (dirt, bugs, etc.). Also a bit concerned about when I wash the MME all the soap and water pooling in there with a slow trickle out of the drain holes. Has this been an issue for you? Thanks.
