If you think the culprit is still around maybe go to the grocery store and get some peppermint oil in the baking section. Pour some/all into/around the area chewed on . It should drive out the critter and let you inspect/repair the damage without the threat of a rat bite and rabies shot .
Do you park outside ?
Yes I do, I will try thanks

The amazing thing about rats is they are so successful. Mammals started out rat-like and lived with the dinosaurs. They'll survive long after the human race unless we take the whole planet down with us ??.

Ok since you do park outside Id definitely go the peppermint plant route IF you can modify your surroundings . The plants are cheap and highly invasive so they'll spread without much intervention from you . Im usually the kiss of death for any plant/flower but even I couldn't kill the plants.
I had a spring, summer and fall with zero bees, wasps, bugs of any type . The plants are said to just replicate the following year all by themselves. Im waiting for spring again to see for myself if this is true .
Ive also used those little pouches that were in an earlier post. Both get the job done and a 2 pronged approach could just be the trick to save you further destruction and expense.
Good Luck
