I had $6500 in damage due to rats, they had to drop the battery to fix the wiring. Put a strobe light under your car at night, and use peppermint spray. Also set up traps on your property.

Most importantly investigate and deal with it because as already mentioned they may chew your car’s wiring and that would be a nightmare!

Back in the days when we lived in the country, I kept some rodent bait in anything that wasn't driven daily.

I bought these to put in my vehicles, strobe plus ultrasonic:

Easy to install in the top of the frunk, that vent cover pops off.

I'll second that. My brother in law put similar gizmos in the trunk and under hood area of my mom's car after some rodent damage. Car's always parked outside, seldom driven. The devices he used have motion sensors and when set appropriately will respond to motion by flashing a strobe and emitting high-frequency sounds the little buggars hate. No more trouble since installing the gizmos and no other variables changed.

I need this for the growing number of stray cats we have around here
Cats won't cause this type of damage but do control rodents that cause this damage. I'd rather have cats than mice or rats. Stray cats can be locked out of your garage but mice have a way of getting in.

I started doing that, but I still found droppings and the occasional dead critter in the vehicle. I switched to mothballs - apparently that don’t like the smell of those. Peppermint may be a better choice, because the smell of mothballs persists long after you remove them.
Repellent > bait, in my experience.

Yeah the cats don’t chew things, they just piss all over everything. Wheels and tires of anything outside the garage for 10 minutes , garage door, front door, back door, back yard furniture, the bbq, holiday yard decorations…
For some reason the ‘fix’ is capturing, neutering and releasing them right back where caught.

I had my garage door open for 5 minutes. Cat came in and pissed on everything at it’s height.
