I want to paint or vinyl the side trim and parts of the bumper, however, they are that rough cheap plastic that wont adhere to anything. Has anybody found any solutions or have any ideas on how to prep it?

Or is this just a lost cause?

sand it smooth, then paint/wrap. wrap wont look good with the texture surface.

You @Astro19

I might have an idea for you. You’re saying you want to add “some color”. Well, do you need to hide ALL of the textured plastic? Or just some.

I’m out screwing around in the garage and my vinyl guy had given me an edge bonding tape for the vinyl. He uses it when an edge won’t stick because it’s over-stretched at a funky angle. He used it on my mirror caps. It really helps hold the edges of the vinyl in place and might be just what you need… if you’re OK with an edge of black textured plastic showing. Because the tape looks just like black textured plastic.

So while I’m waiting on adhesion promoter to dry on the license plate bracket, I put a quick piece of vinyl on the bed rail of my F150. Then sealed the edge with the textured bonding tape. The tape pretty well hides itself and the vinyl seems to want to stay.

If I hadn’t told you there was tape there, you might not know it.

Anyway, the stuff is called moldn’hold. if you’re cool with whatever you’re vinyling still being outlined in textured black, I think this is an option for you.

In the meantime back to trying to paint the license plate bracket.

Oh yeah, that definitely might work. I am looking to vinyl the insides of the back of the select bumper.

The spots that are kind of indented horizontally.

So… just these sections here?
Then the moldnhold might be just the ticket. Lay the vinyl with a little stretch and heat it well. Hold the edges with the moldnhold tape. Worst case, it doesn’t hold for too long and the worst you’re out is the price of the tape.

Exactly. I might just give it a shot. I pick up the car today. Looking to add some there and then possibly look at doing some side stripes and possibly a hood section green.

As far as painting… I’ve done the sanding (or scuffing with scotchrite), tack cloth wipe, alcohol wipe, adhesion promoter, bonding primer, krylon fusion, and black paint for the license plate holder. I’m going to let it set for a couple days while I’m out of town for some Muse-in-airy work. On Thursday I’ll see how well this process made the paint stick.

I might just say screw it and buy the gloss one from Ford. Waste of money, but I need more green on the back ha

I was thinking on this again last night. I am going to try and run the moldnhold tape around the pony under the frunk lid. If I can get to that today I’ll get some pics for you of what it would look like.
Also when I get home today I’ll know if my paint adhered to the license plate bracket.

So after a 36 hour cure, the paint on the plastic front license plate holder seems pretty solid. The sanding, isopropyl wipe, and adhesion promoter seems to have made a big difference. I would not hesitate to use this process on my textured plastics if I had them. Though I still think the moldnhold tape to secure the edges of some vinyl is a better option.

Man I just don't know what the best option is to add color to the back. Maybe I should just buy the bumper part from the premium. Cost is 450 on ford parts.

Got any ideas what to do to the back?

If that was my ride, I would add a big green stripe light to light as I did with my cyber orange with Black....

What about painting/vinyl the entire lower bumper. The part that isn't gloss.

Again if this was me and seeing your front lip is green, I would do the sides and the lower rear green to make it flow all 360
