I used departure time settings for the first time and drove 4 miles in 28° F weather. Charge went from 85% to 86%. Range dropped by around 19 miles.
Has anyone experienced that? Should I be worried?
Today, the charge % has been going down as expected.
As the battery gets cold, the capacity actually decreases. So if you’ve got a 100KWH battery thats warmed to full potential, it holds 100KW of power. At 85% SOC its holding 85KWH. So you burn a 10 KWH and it’s down to 75KWH stored. But… the battery cooled off and it can now only hold 87KWH total. It’s now at 86% of its max potential at that temperature. I drove 14 miles the other day between work (where the car was plugged in so the battery was warm) and a hotel. The car stayed at 100% the whole way because as I used electricity the battery also cooled off.
What you're describing is quite normal in cold weather, especially if it was your first time using the departure timer. When preconditioning is on, the car uses battery power to heat the cabin and preheat the battery.
