Hello everyone!

Newbie here and thanks to everyone who posts all the great info on the Mach E.

I’ve owned a Jeep Grand Cherokee for 10 years and had planned on keeping it for a few years but the lure of simplicity of electric and the styling of the Mach E has me intoxicated.

The question is - would I be happy with the transition? I know used car prices are the highest ever which is the reason I’m considering making a move now instead of waiting.

I’ve looked at the Mach E in person and all the specs and realize I’ll lose range, about 8 cu/ft storage space, ride height (I’m on the shorter side), ground clearance, and off road ability (which I honestly used less than a handful of times as much as I hoped I would use it more for that).

I currently do not have a commute and if I did it’s 14 miles round trip daily. Trips over 150 miles are only a few times a year and we have a newborn coming soon so I imagine that would be less.

What do you think? Worth the cost now to maximize trade in and “go green” and have a fun EV to enjoy?

Longevity - I like to keep my cars for a long time. Could I keep this one for 5,8,10 years and be happy?

Has anyone on here made a similar switch or considering a similar switch?

I’m considering a Premium SR AWD in Infinite Blue with Black interior. I saw that color at a dealer yesterday and it’s gorgeous, especially in the sun.

I appreciate your input in advance, thanks!

I used to drive a 2014 Cherokee. The Grand Cherokee is quite a bit bigger, so I know it's not really the same. I will say the fit and finish of the Mach-E is a little better than the Cherokee. It obviously won't be nearly as capable off-road, but I never took the Cherokee off-road and it sounds like you really don't either. You'll lose some cargo space moving from the GC to the MME. Do you need the space?

Your 14 mile round trip commute is similar to mine, which is 20 miles. The Premium SR AWD in Infinite Blue with Black interior is the exact configuration I went with and is plenty for that type of commute. I don't think you'd be disappointed.

Thanks for the insight! I definitely took advantage of the space over the years but most house projects are done with now with newborn coming soon. We have also packed it to the gills for road trips but my spouse has a Ford Edge which has nearly as much cargo space as the GC.

The only thing in the future I can think of would be hauling bikes which I supposed I could do a roof rack. Nice thing about the GC is with only 2 passengers we could put two bikes, a cooler, and all of our snacks and luggage in the back no problem.

The fact that you have an Edge will compensate for the lack of space otherwise I would have told you to wait especially if you are planning to have more kids. I had a Murano and a Rogue now, and i am downsizing just because of the future savings on gas. Home projrects are done but with a 18 month old and 4yr old i worry about space also but it just means i have to be more picky with what I bring on trips.

I'm in almost identical situation. Had 12 JGC that I loved. Lower distance commute. I've been bummed about less interior space and no towing with ME. But the ME is much more fun to drive and its an EV which JGCs are well behind. I also don't like the 22 JGC roof line how they worked that chrome in. 21 interior is dated. But 21 JGC outside still classic even though its getting old. My IB 4x Prem is due in in weeks. It's really a tradeoff. Depends what's important to you. Frankly I'd be happy with either but I'm pushing to go EV.

Is there any reason you can't keep the Jeep for other purposes? I change my daily driver yearly for reasons, but I keep my '04 Expedition because it's paid for, it pulls my tent trailer, it now holds 1Up bike rack because the Mach E doesn't have a receiver, and it will hold full sheet goods from the big box stores.

Yeah, garage space #1 and Michigan winters - don’t want to park outside and small driveway. And the Jeep has a good trade in value right now and has minor oil leak and don’t need 3 cars (including spouse).

I agree, I did enjoy the interior space on the GC. I think the new GC L looks awesome and was so ready to get it but I fear the hybrid will be way too expensive and I don’t see Jeep going all electric on something of that size for 3-4 years, they seem to be far behind Ford in pure electrification.

I’m like you and love the idea of going pure EV, and less maintenance, etc but still want to have some space

Sounds similar to how I will be soon! Good point - my spouse and I would pack the kitchen sink because we could. Might be good exercise in packing just the essentials.

My wife has a Durango which is very similar to a GC (the passenger scuff plate actually IS from a jeep), and I've got a Mach E. My kids are all grown now, and we really no longer need all the room that the Durango provides. If you still have younger kids (or more than 2), haul a bunch of stuff, or plan to continue offroading then the Mach E probably isn't the right car for you.

The wife likes to bring the house along on trips and as always we only use half. Now she has no choice since itll be my primary car (second car is a Sentra) but the downsize does have me concerned but I always have option to get a bigger secondary car if space does become an issue

Given that your wife has an ICE SUV, you'll have different options depending on the kind of trip you have. My wife has a Ford Explorer, and that's the car we'll probably use when taking the family on a longer road trip...nice to have that option. I'm getting the Mach E because I'm geeked about the idea of EVs, and I've been waiting for a compelling product to come from a Detroit-based automaker (I live in Metro Detroit, and I'm happy to reward Ford for this).

If you go with the MME, I think you'll have a good balance between your two cars, and my guess is that your per-mile cost (compared to the Grand Cherokee, which I'm guessing has a pretty low MPG and higher maintenance costs) will be similar, especially if gas prices continue to march higher.

As far as longevity is concerned, there are plenty of EVs out there that have been on the road for 100,000-200,000+ miles, and they're still going strong. I'm not sure there is yet definitive proof that EVs have longer service lives than ICE vehicles; it really comes down to battery degradation, but many EV owners are well past 100,00 miles with very little degradation. As long as you don't rely wholly on DC fast charging, your batteries should have a very long life.
