To be clear, the $1/min fee is only assessed if the Supercharger is more than 50% full, it starts at 90% battery, and only at select stations (likely in urban areas, not rural areas). You are not penalized for charging to 100% if the station isn't busy. But if the station fills up then you need to be cognizant.

I am totally for it because it speeds up wait times and prevents charger hogs. Charging slows down dramatically by 90%. And most people don't need to charge above 90% outside of rare circumstances when trying to cross a charging desert. In 95% of cases, it would be faster to make second charging stop than trying to charge up all the way to 100% on a DC charger. Plus it's bad for the battery to charge that high on DC. Ford and myself recommend stopping at 80%.

I can only hope Electrify America adopts something like this to cut down on all the charger abuse by people with free charging plans that make everybody wait while they get their free 100%. Or people that park and disappear for two hours.

Retired. I'd say it was a mid life crisis, but not many people live to 140.

To me, idle fees and congestion fees might be reasonable. I am okay with it.

Free DC charging should go away, IMHO.

It is one thing to give away 250 kWh to encourage people to learn DC charging.

It is quite another thing to give away charging for three years. That promotes congestion.

Not that I disagree with the idea of EA charging a fee when the station is busy, but I think that fee should be paid to the driver trying to charge if more than half the chargers at a station are debated or down for maintenance.

We have GTPE and 2023 Model Y AWD long range. Pulled in supercharger 15 minutes got 143 miles gone. Easy in and out. Eventually everyone will be thrilled to travel knowing superchargers are everywhere. Bidens green corridor plan on chargers ever fifty miles on major routes 1 mile from exit will make ev traveling faster and no range anxiety. We live 5 miles from PA turnpike off rt8 Gibsonia Pa and chargers already designated at Sheetzs. Future looks good.

All this does is just further induce range anxiety.

MME. Standard Range model. 250 miles. Cut by 30% in winter... 175 miles... limited to charge to only 80%... (140 miles) taking 45 minutes in winter. Limited refueling infrastructure at this point in time.
Not sure how this induces rang anxiety.
The point is don’t block the charger, same thing people don’t do at a gas pump.
This is equivalent to ICEing a charger.

If we have to ration resources this early into EV adoption, it’s a serious problem.
Rationing should be a temporary emergency fix, not a permanent solution.
Can you imagine some peoples' cost to fill their petro vehicle if similar surcharges were in place at gas stations?? Like when they occupy an idle pump to clean their windshield, use washroom &/or buy coffee and donuts???

I can probably do all those things in five minutes. It's different when the charger is being blocked for an extra half-hour. Reminds me of this:

Because you’ll be penalized for charging fully, so you have to charge more frequently.

Want to stop for lunch or dinner or shopping and charge? Fine, but you have to keep checking back with your car and maybe move it before you hit 90%, even if you planned on stopping for a longer time.

The DC charging experience already sucks.

This will just make it suck more.

If we want to encourage mass adoption I think this actually would take us two steps backwards.

I understand the need, but this doesn’t fix the core problem.

This is the equivalent of solving a “not enough parking” problem by handing out more parking tickets.

If the goal is to get more people to go to a place, more parking tickets will have the opposite effect. The solution is more parking spaces.

For that you need better battery technology, which is being worked on as we speak. The 2035 ban on new ICE cars is to accelerate that research.

If you didn’t know that the car will slow charging to keep the battery from getting damaged, then you didn’t do enough research before buying the car. BTW, it’s the car that does that not the charging station.

I don’t think car makers are advertising them as road trip cars. The advertisement says things like Avg commute is 35 miles we can do 300, so don’t worry about your commute.

Also the charger will send you a message when it reaches a certain point.

I see your solutions are to force people to do what you want (idle fees, 2035 ban etc).

I prefer honey vs the stick.

On this subject, what I want is a car that goes 1 million miles without refueling. I don’t think I’ll get what I want.

If you don’t like where the industry is going, I don’t know who you need to complain to.

No need for hyperbole.

I think what people want are more chargers, that actually work, and deliver max charging speeds.

Then there will be no need for some HOA type rules and punishments for people who want to fully charge their cars.

Doesn’t affect me though. I’ve never DC charged and never plan to. But for those who do……..

Maybe they could get creative and treat charging stations like a valet service. 1 person moving cars around as needed when charged. Gas stations have attendants. In some states it’s even illegal to pump your own gas. But either way, I’m not a fan of the proposed penalty/solution.
