The Federal tax at the pump on gasoline is $0.184 per gallon. $250 is the equivalent tax to 1,358.7 gallons of gas purchased at the pump. So In a reasonably efficient car about the size of a Mach-E, we could expect to get around 28 miles/gallon, give or take, but let's just go with 28mpg... If they charge us $250/ year, that's the same amount we would pay if we owned a 28mpg ICE car and drove it 38K miles in a year.It is fair to pay road use tax, but the analysis I saw said the $250 the federal government is trying charge is more than a pickup with average mileage would be charged. Also, some of that road money is going to build sound barriers in cities. If only every vehicle could be quiet like ours!
Proponents of the $250 federal tax claim that federal fuel tax has not been increased in many years and is too low to keep up with the needs of our federal highway infrastructure. I do agree with those points to a certain degree, but they need to impose the tax (and/or raise tax on gasoline) to impact all vehicles fairly, not just target EVs and other efficient vehicles that our current administration doesn't like.
