It is fair to pay road use tax, but the analysis I saw said the $250 the federal government is trying charge is more than a pickup with average mileage would be charged. Also, some of that road money is going to build sound barriers in cities. If only every vehicle could be quiet like ours!
The Federal tax at the pump on gasoline is $0.184 per gallon. $250 is the equivalent tax to 1,358.7 gallons of gas purchased at the pump. So In a reasonably efficient car about the size of a Mach-E, we could expect to get around 28 miles/gallon, give or take, but let's just go with 28mpg... If they charge us $250/ year, that's the same amount we would pay if we owned a 28mpg ICE car and drove it 38K miles in a year.

Proponents of the $250 federal tax claim that federal fuel tax has not been increased in many years and is too low to keep up with the needs of our federal highway infrastructure. I do agree with those points to a certain degree, but they need to impose the tax (and/or raise tax on gasoline) to impact all vehicles fairly, not just target EVs and other efficient vehicles that our current administration doesn't like.

Utah gives the EV owner an option. Flat $130 EV fee or you can enroll in UDOT/RUC. It charges approx .01 by miles driven not to exceed $130 annually. If your car connects electronically, it deducts automatically from the account. Unfortunately, the Mach E software will not sync. In this case, you submit a photo of your odometer when the account is created and every 1/4 you get an email request for an updated odometer photo at which time your mileage fee is deducted, States with flat fees are ripping off owners that are low mileage drivers. In essence you're being charged the same for something that you use less than high mileage drivers

As if the $250 per EV tax in the Big Beautiful Bill weren't punitive enough, now Ohio Senator Bernie Moreno wants to make it $500:

It's because we are being singled out . Its punitive . We need to sue using the 14th Amendment as our argument ..
"The government must treat all individuals the same way , impartially , under similar conditions and circumstances"
We are not being treated that way.
My registration will be $450 annually just for "gas tax" reimbursement if the Bigly Beautiful Bill passes . If I was treated fairly my gas tax fee would be around $120ish (state and fed total ) since I don't put a lot of miles on my GT. Last year was 5000 miles.
The federal fee is apparently based on just under 33,000 miles if you do the math. Where'd they come up with that number ? Google "average miles driven" and you get a range of 10 - 15,000 miles per year depending on which article the search engine is citing .
Constitutional law? That’s hilarious.

Let’s just say that when that was written, everyone was NOT treated the same.

This idiot is my Senator. I guess I don't have to wonder why he never replied to my reaching out to his office over the gas tax

Virginia has a program where you install an OBD to report your mileage and you pay based on that. I'm a low-mileage driver, so I save about 30% over just paying the flat fee for 11,600 miles per year.
The only problem for me is that since I m still active duty military, I cannot get a Virginia license until I become a legal resident (of which AZ is my state) until 2027. I am more than happy to slap that on my car, since my morning commute will be less than 15 miles total each workday. Frustrating to see how much EV owners are being targeted rather than incentivized by helping reduce noise and emission pollution.

Minnesota just voted for their EV fee to go from $75 to $150.

All of them.
Some people act like the bandwidth and storage space comes right off of their computer at home. Why does it matter how many threads there are? If they want a wiki, they should create one for people who just want to read information. A forum is a conversation. They must not like conversation.

Tag renewal for my car in NC is a whopper !! $845 total due includes a $214 ev fee, the county property tax and $30 vehicle fee.
Here are links to previous threads on the forum about this topic.

The first has Texas in the title but has input from members all across the country.

The second is specific to Virginia and lays out that state's approach -- flat fee on registration, or share telematics through the manufacturer or install an OBD device for tracking by third-party vendor to be charged for actual miles driven. Virginia bases its rate on the average mileage of all cars in Virginia (currently 11,600/year). Note that in Virginia even PHEVs pay this highway use fee since they achieve better than 25 mpg (so, all fuel-efficient and electric vehicles).
