Sorry this has likely been posted before but I’m new to this forum and my new Mach e. I intend to do the majority of charging at home. These chargers scattered around my part of California appear to be operated by different companies and they operate a bit like Fast Trak, the device used for bridge tolls in that they keep a portion of your credit card (say $10) as a “top up”. I’ve used at least two different public chargers and each of them has retained money from my credit card. WTF? Seems like an unregulated scam. Nice to see mew charging stations appear but I’ll be avoiding them unless it’s an emergency. Is this being addressed at all?

Why aren't you using your free 250kw from Ford with Plug and Charge? https://www.macheforum.com/site/threads/how-to-enable-plug-charge-in-7-steps.3094/

As to addressing the question - there are many networks, that's true. Ford is trying to address SOME of the issue with Plug and Charge, but they have only a few networks and haven't figured out how to give us the same rate as the preferential rate we can get directly from the network.

Electrify America, EA, is who provides the free 250kw and you'll likely find them the fastest DC chargers around. And they have plenty of issues.

Other networks do indeed "fill up" when you hit a number like $5, and add another $10. Right now I have the following balances - EA - $13.35, ChargePoint - $10. Not too bad.

I am signed up with 4 networks. I use one for the most part, another occasionally, once each for the other two. I think between them there is about $60-ish floating out there. This is for my Fusion Energi. I probably will be not using them much at all after I get my MME.

Actually, Ford is addressing it as best they can. They have created "the blue oval charging network", which is really just a single Ford account that gets access to EA and several other third party charging networks. When you activated your car you should have set up your account, and in a week or so you'll get your 250 free kwh of charging at electrify america. in order to use those kwh you have to initiate charging through the fordpass app instead of the ea app. You can also enable "plug-n-charge" which allows you to just plug in the car to an EA charger without going into any apps: the car and charger negotiate a handshake and the charger knows to charge your fordpass account.

This is an older thread detailing how to enable p-n-c so the prompts might be different but the steps should be the same:
