Drove Michigan to Florida end of August. Drove it again this week. Back then we took the Mach-E, this time the F-150 with a 36 gallon gas tank. Same departure and arrival locations. Truck bed was full, as was backseat. Not heavy weights, maybe 200 pounds of stuff. Lots more physical stuff in truck.

Day 1 last time drove from 8:14 to 9:38. Day 2 from 7:52 to 5:55. That's 23.45 hours on the road, including all stops. 17.9 hours actual driving, 1,205 miles, 67.3mph. Time spent charging 5.55 hours.

This time day 1 was 8:34 to 8:52. Day 2 was 8:11 to 4:51. That's 20.97 hours. 18.7 hours actual driving, 1,187 miles, 63.5mph. Mach-E took 2.48 hours longer or 11.8%, but drove 6% faster. Time spent on fuel and bathroom stops 2.27 hours.

Each trip had detours, issues, etc. Mach-E conditions were perfect on that trip, this trip was 30s to 50s then 60s. F-150 got 19 then 20mpg.

Mach-E of course was cheaper. Charging vs bathroom stops was 3.28 hours longer or 144% more.

Had we taken the Mach-E, we would have had to do more charging stops due to temperature, and charging would have been slower.

All data from Google Maps timelines. When we return I can see how that jibes with FordPass, etc. Stops on this trip seem longer than I would have guessed. Sometimes Timelines isn't perfect.

This was super helpful. Did you use your own map or use the trip planner on the car to do the road trip?

When we take the Mach-E, we use FordPass, ABRP, and GoogleMaps, as well as the EA app and PlugShare.

I missed lane centering and intelligent cruise, and when I punch the F-150 while I love the V8 kicking in, I missed the instant acceleration of the Mach-E. Also, when I punch the V-8 it pins at 10 gallons per hour on the OBLink app...

We used Ford’s trip planner / navigation system for our holiday road trip from South Florida to the Mississippi Gulf Coast and it told us a total travel time of 16 hours in our AWD standard range for what would be a 10 hour drive in an ICE, which was accurate. We were experiencing a cold front, too, which didn’t help battery range. We might have been able to shave 30 minutes of charging time if we didn’t try to go to 75-80% SOC each time, but we have lead feet on the Highway so we needed the extra juice (although we mostly kept it on 85 mph on cruise control after getting down to under 10% before one charging stop). We also used the EA, PlugShare, and the FPL app, but we would’ve been fine with Ford Pass and the onboard navigation system as it had a more comprehensive list of chargers.

Nice to know it’s a doable trip in one day, but there is a reason why we still have an order in for an ER AWD, lol ? Marginal range improvement is still improvement.

Update -

On the return trip, on day 1 we drove from 8:02 to 7:30. Day 2 from 8:01 to 4:10. That's 19.62 hours on the road, including all stops, 17.92 hours of driving. 1,220 miles, average speed of 68.1 mph. Time spent on fuel and bathroom stops 1.7 hours.

Can't compare exactly to trip last September, because we diverted to South Carolina on the trip home, but let's do the exercise. On day 1 we drove from 7:50 to 6:28. Day 2 from 7:56 to 10:43. That's 25.83 hours on the road, including all stops, 20.53 hours of driving. 1,309 miles, average speed of 63.76 mph. Time spent on fuel and bathroom stops 5.3 hours.

Each trip had detours, issues, etc. Charging on way home with Mach-E in September included having to hit a slower charger to get home. Charging vs. bathroom stops was 3.6 hours longer or 212% more.

Overall, let's compare.

Trip to Florida was 23.45 hours in the Mach-E, 20.97 hours in the truck, 11.8% longer.
Trip from Florida, albeit a different route, was 25.83 hours in the Mach-E, 19.62 hours in the truck, 31.7% longer.

Using 20% as a guide is a great way to accurately plan a trip, but the amount of driving you'll do in one day greatly impacts things.

Further, this comparison was done with stopping charge at 80%. Now that we can charge to 90%, and we have 91kWh instead of 88kWh, a long day could be one stop less.

Caveat - I have not compared GoogleMaps Timeline to FordPass yet.

When you use avg speed, is that calculated or from the trip computer? What is your normal number when distance driving? Do you try to stay at 65, 70 or some other target? Just curious. I’m wondering if averaging 75 or more would cut enough time off to offset the lower range. I haven’t taken a long trip yet.

Calculated based on GoogleMaps timeline distance and time. I drive 3 to 5 over the limit. Limits were 70 or 65 mostly. More than 75 would drain battery faster.
