Experience with the Valet mode?

I saw a thread or two on this topic that was over 3 years old. Does anyone have recent experience with using the Valet mode? I recently had to have a tire repaired. I don't carry the fob. I had to leave my phone in the car because they would not let me drive it into the garage. How receptive are garages and valets to use the Valet code? Do they have a process to record the code or do they look at you like you are from Mars? TY

I live in NYC and most places I've parked (valet/garages) have flat out said, and even have a sign up, that that you must leave a key/fob with them or they won't park the car.

One time I walked away before the guy realized I left the fob in the cup holder and he chased me down adamant that I not leave without leaving behind the key. They didn't care one bit about valet mode. That's only been my experience though.
