I'm getting closer to ordering my Mach-e premium AWD but I'm still not sure what battery to choose, I live in Detroit and my commute is about 60 miles per day. What do you guys think, should I get an extended battery or could I get away the standard battery. I'm not planning to drive it cross-country but it does get cold here and might kill the range a bit. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks.

With a 60 mile roundtrip commute you'll need to charge the battery every 3-4 days regardless of which you chose. If you are charging at home every night then no big deal either way.

Sounds like you are the perfect candidate for a Standard Range.

Standard range and save the 5K if you dont plan long trips with the MME.

My average commute is closer to 90 mi/work day. I chose the standard range battery.

For $5k....I can afford to pay for rental vehicles when I do take road trips and still have quite a lot left over. Maybe even enough to pay for the entire trip....or two....or three.

Extended. If it's a short term vehicle, likely resale value of the extended battery will be mostly recovered. If it's a long term vehicle, then the range of even the extended might look small, in say, 10 years.

It's estimated for 211 miles on Standard Range and 270 miles on Extended Range.

I'm sure 60 miles is no problem. I went with extended because (a) I tend to keep cars and drive them until the wheels fall off (This car replaces my last car which I bought new ... 15 years ago) and (b) I go sailing in the summer and my sailboat is located about 85 miles away. I tend to spend the weekend at the boat ... and I really don't have access to power anywhere around the parking lot to charge it overnight ... not even on 120v power. So I figured I'd need some buffer power to last the weekend (if things get desperate there is an Electrify Canada DC Fast Charger in town.)

I think it also comes down to individual personality. I ordered extended range because it was the largest capacity available, even though for the past 4 years, I've been 95% electric with my C-Max and it' tiny battery. I also think that if I'm happy with the car generally and want to keep it for a very long time, having a higher capacity battery will allow me to keep the car longer even as the battery degrades over time.

First, for the vast majority of people, the lowest possible range (SR AWD 211mi) will suffice the vast majority of the time.

Second, among the 4 primary configurations (SR RWD, SR AWD, ER RWD, ER AWD) the range difference varies from 19miles (probably meaningless) to 89miles (potentially meaningful).

So, plot out a few of the road trips you think you might make and determine how that range difference would actually impact your trip. Keep in mind when charging on the go, even if you can locate a 150kw rapid charger, it's gonna take you 30-45 minutes to get back to 80%, and you can forget about the final 20% unless you'll be charging overnight. Also keep in mind that your highway range will *probably* be about 80% of the estimated EPA range (not enough data on this, but that’s a safe bet). Remember, highway (road trip) range is the only range that really matters.

Once you see the difference (or maybe not so much) in how the ranges affect your road trips, you can decide the extended battery and AWD adds are "worth it" - to you.
