My car has started to see phantom cars in front of it. With no driving assist features on, the screen will show a red box in front of my car, indicating I'm following too close to vehicle in front of me, but there is none there. It's not constant - sometimes is starts to toggle between red and blue boxes (car or no car in front). Once I actually have a real car in front of me, it does seem to behave properly again. Once the car is gone it sometimes falls back into the bad behavior. With the driving assist on (adaptive cruise or full blue cruise), the car brakes since it thinks it's too close to the car in front.

I've seen the other threads about phantom braking, but I don't think my situation is the same. I have the autodetect speed limit from signs turned off (intelligent cruise control).

I'm curious of others have seen this. Either my searching terms suck (and others have this problem), or I may actually have a rare faulty sensor that needs repair.

That can happen if the front radar sensor gets out of alignment. The sensor is located in the center between the grille shutter openings. If you hit the chin of the front bumper on a curb or parking bumper you could have tweaked the sensor, or the sensor bracket may have broke after hitting a pothole.

Thanks for the info. I don't think we hit anything with the bumper. I wonder if the graphene ceramic coating I put on the plastic over the sensor is causing issues.

I don't think so, you'd get a sensor blocked message. This is an alignment thing. Should probably make a dealer appointment.

It seems to be a software issue when no cruise mode is active. Blue cruise and adaptive cruise control works just fine. I used it for 160 miles today without issue.
