I agree I saw many posts on FB of people paying over MSRP may not have been the majority as you said, but there were alot. I was looking at the RAV4 Prime back then and dealer wanted $10k over msrp, at that price i could get a much better car and started my search which lead me to the Mach E and placed my order in 2020.
One thing to keep in mind about 2021 pricing is that the holdback on Mach-e’s at the time was exactly $0. Dealers were paid a flat fee for each unit they sold plus other various incentives from Ford. Selling below MSRP was, at the time, taking a loss on the car.

I know the Mach-E specifically had some markups from dealers who wanted to pull in more money on a highly anticipated new car that was in initial short supply, but did the broader car market have markups in 2021? I thought that became more of a thing in 2022.

Ah, no. Ford Motor Company doesn’t set the transaction price, it’s negotiated between the dealer and the buyer. I’m sure lots of people overpaid at that time because of supply and demand.

Ford Motor Company wouldn’t hold the loan anyways. It would be with Ford Credit or another lender.
Yep this was a time when the Dealers threw in the AMV or Added Market Value (aka Supply and Demand) fee Of $5000+.

I would suggest sending a PM to @Ford Motor Company. There clearly appears to be a problem if you’ve owned your car for three years and still owe 45k on it. In this situation, Ford will usually cancel your loan. The most important thing is that you get to drive a newer vehicle.

I feel the pain. I was searching late summer/fall of '22. I tried the online buying thing to get around the markup, but the dealer assigned to 'selling' me the car would call me and tell me there was a markup anyhow. A san antonio dealer called me back after I had already went round and round with their dumb 7k markup requirement and said they would give it to me at MSRP. In the end, I drove to San Antonio end of November and although I kept saying I was not going to pay 'extra' and they had finally agreed in writing. Once I was there with the option to uber back to the bus station and head back to Houston on bus..... they snuck an extra 1500$ over the MSRP on for dumb stuff. I did buy it but was so fricken mad about the entire thing. I left message all over google, yelp, and wrote ford directly with the forwarded messages of the no markup. Crickets. Maybe other dealers did this too. I don't know. I do know that I am not a fan of Ford/Ford dealerships due to that mess of trying to find anyone to sell me a car for months on end without huge markups. And the lie of no markup once I drove hours to get to THAT dealership. Elon's website car buying situation looks GREAT to me!

I have been paying extra 25% each month and am still about 7k underwater on my car. To the op, start praying that someone hits your car (if you bought the gap).
