More than 1 of us got the reference .

This is a "tech" solution deeply in search of a problem, which will probably bring on far more problems - like accidentally shooting people in the eye with lasers strong enough to vaporize water.

But why do they need this? These cars drive themselves.. the next update they are replacing the steering wheel with the toy version that Maggie Simpson uses and the windshield will be replaced with a screen that displays the NFT of the dear leader dancing...

Oops pedestrian hit, now on windscreen. Activate lasers to remove evidence.

This is a non-story. Tesla news sites need something new every day. This story was written because nothing else was happening.

Companies incentivize filing patents on everything. Lots of impractical things get a patent filing. If someone else later figures out how to make it work, they can claim "we thought of that first" and grab an undeserved license fee.

Just came across this and thought it was amusing. Have to give it to Tesla, they think out of the box.
Never going to happen. For a little background. My college required each major to put together comprehensive exams. For my physics degree, I had to do a test on the courses taught over the 4 years, the advanced GREs and a year long project which I did on the physics of laser-induced fusion. I declined a job at Livermore Labs working on that. I know a bit about lasers.

The power required to be effective would be similar to what the engines consume. Plus, you cannot assume that there will not be specular reflections which would be extremely dangerous. I may, repeat may, have a laser that could vaporize rain drops but would never do this without sufficient eye protection. Add in what we experience here in Colorado where they put sand on the roads, your windshield is going to be opaque and irregular. This would likely blind the driver and anybody lucky enough to be within a hundred yards or so. Longer would be a possibility. Come to think of it, you would likely start spider cracks everywhere on the windshield due to irregular heat.

as if Elon doesn't have enough issues with the FAA.

now he wants to reflect lasers into the sky.

i gotta admit, that's some boss level trolling he's doing right there.

Hate to see the lasers start to blind the drivers when they hit a big raindrop and refraction causes it to bend and reflect.
