exactly - it's not worth the risk for such a small reward. it should be relatively painless and just cost you a hundred bucks or so. You probably don't even have to tell them you're doing it after the fact; it is such a small thing they will probably only want to do a "final" inspection - which means after everything is done.

If you had an electrician install it they should have known better.

Let's just say I better pull the permit. "Gulp".
