I've avoided setting a time window in my EVSE because I found that if I set a departure time in the car, the EVSE refused to provide power if that departure was outside the scheduled active window. Because of that I only set charge times in the car and allow my EVSE to power at any time the car asks.
I found that by setting the window in my EVSE, it does indeed prevent the car from charging, or preconditioning. That's great, because it makes me make a conscious decision to override the EVSE (takes about 5 seconds) if I choose to pull power during my peak rate period. That's a very rare occasion, but even a remote start will pull power if plugged in. I don't want to use peak hours without having to jump through that 2nd hoop.

Agreed - the only problem with using the EVSE is that it only allows one window to charge. My utility has two windows that are at the super low rate and Chargepoint only allowed me to set one window.

Just to clarify, I have it set in both the EVSE and the car. I can't set multiple windows for my JuiceBox either. With your two windows, there is no way to set the EVSEs to do that, except from 1AM to 4PM to prevent charging between 4PM and 1AM.
