I just received an email from Ford that my 2022 MME GTPE will be built the week of September 5th.

Will the 2023 MME be significant better?
Does anyone know what the cost increase will be for 2023?

Which option would you choose?

Option 1
Sell my 2021 California R1 and take delivery of 2022 GT PE. I am in The NYC area and the roads are terrible. The main reason for the upgrade is magna ride suspension and better seats. I can
sell my 2021 for what I paid for it.

Option 2
Hold off on taking delivery of 2022 and order 2023 for the android auto interface. Sell my 2021 Cal R1 for less in 2023.

Option 3
Sell Cal R1
Buy 2022
Order 2023 and hope to sell 2022 for close to purchase price and pick up another 7, 500 credit (if congress extends the credit) with the 2023.

My concern with selling 2022 is that Ford is suppose to ramp up deliveries in 2023 thus pushing resale prices down. 2022 will have an older operating system also making it less desirable.

I am interested to hear your thoughts.

Thank You!

Nobody knows those answers yet. But we should know pricing and specs by the end of August, so you can just decide then. I don’t expect any major changes including the operating system. Android Automotive is still a ways out.

Color changes and minor tweaks. That’s about it. We’re at peak used car prices so maybe sooner is better for tradeins

Not taking delivery of the 2022 is essentially burning thousands of dollars on fire. That should be enough to make your choice

Agreed w/MachKet. Take possession of 2022. You will still get tax credit. Order a 2023 if you want as an option, and then decide later whether or not to act on it.

I didn't get an email yet, but my account on Ford says my build week is 9/12. I'm pretty stoked.

And now more alleged tax breaks by the weasels in the beltway are coming. I’d want the 2023. I am hoping my late February premium order falls over to 2023.

Tax credit for Mach E looks like it’s getting cut in half either way.

But they’re assembled in Mexico.
Cells aren’t. Those are the important part of the battery. It would probably be really expensive to source minerals from the US just to ship them to Poland vs some place like Russia or Africa.

The cells aren’t, but the first half of the credit is about final assembly of the battery, which should be fine in Mexico. The second half of the credit is more of a question mark because a certain percentage of the minerals have to come from a country with a free trade agreement. I haven’t seen anything published about where the minerals are mined for the MME.

Much of the lithium comes from a near ghost town in Nevada. Amazing place I have visited as a metallurgist. The locals are out of a Stephen King book and Charles Manson would have fit right in

Jes sayin. , maybe the largest lithium source on the planet. Amazingly inaccessible and difficult to mine. Multiple water forced extractions before and after really cool explosions

ADDED ADDENDUM

Nevada's only operational lithium mine is in Silver Peak, in Esmerelda County. It extracts the mineral from groundwater by pumping it into holding ponds on the surface where it will evaporate. Since the Thacker Pass Project's lithium is in the clay, they will use strip mining to gather the ore.Apr 6, 2022
