Hello All,

Just getting used to Ford Mach-E, been 4 months now. Mine is a 2023 Premium Extended battery range( Nickel Cobalt Manganese (NCM) )

Quick question- What is the best charging for this model of battery- is it 80% or 90%??
Any suggestions, can we charge it to 100% , once a while( using level-2 charger at home)

Appreciate your comments.

Thanks!

this has been discussed quite frequently and opinions vary. Ford's original recommendation was charge to 90% (this is for the non LFP batteries) for general use, but don't hesitate to charge to 100% if you need the extra range. Also, you don't want to leave the battery at 100% for extended periods. This is for home (AC) charging. FYI< you could absolutely charge less than 90% on a regular basis if you don't need the range. Over three years, I've been charging to 90% but only charge a couple times a week

DC charging. recommended to 80% simply because the charge rate drops off substantially after 80%. Although the charging curve has been smoothed somewhat since 21 so it's not quite as steep a dropoff.

Welcome!

The short answer is read the manual, which has actually changed over the years. The 2021 manual (IIRC) recommended 90%, as did the '22 MY manual. Then for 2023 it was 80%. As far as any of us on the forum can tell the battery chemistry (pre LFP) didn't change, so it's all a bit confusing. This is why you'll see differing opinions on the forum occasionally, from people who have read the manual.

In the Summer I charge at home (Hi from Oakville!) to 80% because I naturally get more range in the summer. Come winter I move it to 90% as I'm frequently in Waterloo driving the kids to Uni.

I think if you stick with 80% until you *need* more you'll be fine - the batteries are proving to be quite robust. Of course the occasional 100% change over night before a long journey is fine.

What's also be talked about in academic circles is keeping the battery charged more than 50% or 60% as much as possible - i.e don't wait to charge it. I charge at home every night, back up to 80%. Forget all you were taught about the old NiCad batteries, charge at home each day.

This is a long video, but it's got great content. Professor is from Dalhousie.

Shorter, also great info from my favourite YouTube engineer

Enjoy the car, and don't over-think it.
