I finally got my car up on four jack stands so I could give a quick inspection down there, looking for things even an amateur could catch, such as boot tears, etc.
I found that mud daubers built a nest on a CV half-axle dynamic damper. I guess the wasp-glue worked well on the rubber. But overall, a poor choice that must have been dizzying for the little daubers. (I knocked it off.)
