No play / pause button on the steering wheel?

Then it’s a miss. Play pause skip are basic trio of controls that can be immensely useful in one cluster

I don’t disagree, you just need to pick a different button. I would argue the phone button could serve a dual purpose. When you’re not in a call pressing will play/pause and press and hold will redial. When a call comes in pressing would answer and then hang up, an incoming call already pauses the music and resumes after.

The manual shows that OK button is to stop / mute. So…

What page in your manual. I did a search with the words mute and ok. There was nothing that links them. The manual version that I now use is the post 4.2.2 UI change manual. Possibly my Acrobat search missed something.
