I got very specific instructions on how to make it unusable. They basically want you to bend the pins and verify that with a photo:

Here is what to do with the V1 adapter after receiving your replacement.

Please provide us with a picture of the adapter once it has been rendered unusable.

Once you have completed the steps, the adapter will be rendered unusable. For recycling, here are a few recommended options:
