We just returned from a trip from Lawrence, Kansas out to Crested Butte Colorado. This drive to Colorado is one we have done 3 times in the 22 ER AWD Premium. In just the 2 years of the trip, the number of DCFC options has almost doubled , and since I do not have my adapter yet this does not even figure in the Tesla SC network. The chargers have always been well positioned and we have never had any "range anxiety", but having more options lately is nice. Charging has always been very reliable, other than having to jump towers a couple of times. Across Kansas, EA has stations in Salina, Hays, and Colby and these are very good stations. In Colorado, Chargepoint stations are more frequent, and they tend to be in the smaller more rural towns. Chargepoint is always a very reliable stop, never had one broken or a dead tower. While they usually max out around 70-80 KWH they tend to hold that power and never fade. Our CP stations in Colorado were at Colo. Springs, Salida, Crested Butte, LakeCity, Alamosa and Pueblo. These were all good stations.
WE did 14 DCFC equally split between EA and CP. It was a 1700 mile drive and we used 569 KWH. This was a nice suprise as it worked out to 2.9 mi/kwh with probably 2/3 of the drive at 75 mph and the rest around 60 mph. The cost of the DCFC was $218 for an average of .38 per Kwh. Our old Fusion would average @ 28 mpg on the trip and if you figure around $3.40/gal. it would have cost us @ $206 in gas. So, not really any savings in fuel cost while travelling. I'm not bothered by that as I realize charging stations are enormous investments with small usage. I do not mind the cost as long as they prove reliable and that certianly was the case on this trip.
As always, we had a great time in Colorado, great hiking, food and people. The Mach-E is a wonderful road-trip car. I really like 1pd driving in the mountains and you do'nt even realize you are climbing up a pass as it's so quiet and powerfull.
I do wish the "lack of public chargers, range anxiety" articles would stop in the media. I have never found that to be the case.
