Today when leaving the gym, I tried to utilize the passcode to start my MachE. For some reason, the keyboard would not show up until my wife got within range of the car with my phone, which I use as a key. Is this intended behavior? Or was this just a glitch? Am I stranded if my cell phone gets lost or dies?

That's a glitch, keep trying and pressing the brake pedal multiple times until the keyboard shows up. You may need to tap in the password field to get the cursor and keyboard to appear.

Too bad you don't have a FOB. That works all the time.

Mine usually times out a second after the keyboard appears. Yes, tap on the screen and press the brake/start button until the keyboard appears. Usually takes 2 times on mine.

Just to cover all the bases — you did try to start the car (brake+start button) right? You won’t get the keyboard until you do that. Even then, it probably takes a few seconds to appear.

I tested my door code and start password recently, I made sure my phone was nowhere near the vehicle at the time and had no issues like you describe. Some good suggests above regarding why it didn't seem to work, or at worse just a glitch.
