Here's a link to an article in WAPO about Tesla's continued challenges with phantom braking. I've had a few instances where on a two lane road with a left hand turn lane on a curve, fool the MME collision avoidance software such that it will suddenly apply the brakes when in cruise control, but not slam on them. I'm now preconditioned to be prepared, but the Tesla issue sounds more serious.
I think this shows the limitations of autonomous driving for the foreseeable future. I've spent a fair bit of time now driving with both lane centering and adaptive cruise control, as well as hand free, and at best it's a driver assist, but in reality the assistant drives like a 16 year old who just got their license, constantly wandering around due to only looking 50 feet ahead at best ahead of the car directly in front of you. Having better roadmaps onboard might alleviate some of the poor decision making as mentioned above, but manufacturers need to get out ahead of the turd Elon laid with "Fully Automated" driving and the expectations it has created for unsophisticated consumers/drivers.
