Its not going to happen - there is no way to get enough unification between brands on battery sizes, chemistries, BMS communication protocols, etc. I mean, think about how many tire sizes are made - you could probably satisfy the entire automotive industry with 10 sizes of tires but look how many we have because every manufacturer has to optimize to their specific case.

Then add the difficulty in swapping, the liability of managing those potentially damaged batteries, quality checks before reinstallation, customer frustration with giving up their good battery for a crappy abused one, and it just won‘t ever fly. It was never a good idea, and it won’t happen.

Now an area that it might work would be in fleet vehicles such as delivery and buses, because those operate within fixed constraints, are controlled by one party, have no “personal ownership” pain, and may actually have to go hundreds of miles per day, every day, unlike most individual auto owners. Though even then, high power wireless charging seems to be taking hold faster - BYD has a 200kW wireless charger the size of a manhole cover that charges across an 11“ gap...
