I bought a 2021 First Edition In March of ‘21. It has about 22k miles on it now. It simply put has everything that was available at that time. It has ER battery with 348hp and probably some stuff not available today, eg parking assist, hands free tailgate, etc. Today the car runs as intended and the body is dent free. The rub is it’s the only vehicle I’ve ever owned that was towed three times. I just don’t have faith in it for long trips. So I’m trading for a Ford Bronco sport Badlands. The dealer offered $34.5 in trade? I think I could get $40k (it was $61k new). Thoughts?

Probably won't get $40,000 on trade in, but maybe private sale.

If I am doing the math correct, that works out to over $1 for every mile he has driven it. Ouch.

Owning an ICE would be much cheaper at that rate. Just sayin'............

Yes, but for five bucks I can put one on thars’

I respect the folks that bought a 21’. I don’t have “early adopter” kind of money or time. I am finally seeing infrastructure starting to appear. It is hard for me to picture going back to an ICE at this point. Having to be towed three times in two years would probably do it. I have mentioned on a couple surveys now that customer confidence is crucial. The HVBJB problem, and the way it was addressed has been a problem that will haunt them, as evidenced here. Customer lost.

Why were you towed? What happened?
First time was a month after I bought it. On Easter Sunday, the 12V battery died in the Burger King lot in Dublin, GA. I took 2 days to get a tow. Ford customer service was great and they covered everything... rental car, etc. But it took two weeks to get the battery in Macon GA. That was the worst. The tow truck had to put a dolly under each locked wheel to roll it out of the parking place and get it on a flat bed.
The next was at my dentist office. Just died. Took a week to discover the charge port was faulty and replace it.
The last was while driving, it lost power on the freeway but I got it home and the dealer picked it up the next day leaving me an Explorer to drive. Turned out to be the junction box which required removing the big battery. Took almost two weeks.
All of these events came to be know by Ford and some recalls issued.
Since then, the car has performed perfectly and I truly love the damn thing but I'm just Leary of driving long distances. Sure it was an early model. Supposedly only 400 were built. I like the was it looks and it satisfies my needs. I can charge at home for 1.4 cents/Kwh! which makes it very inexpensive to drive. The few road trips (except #1) went without incident and every EA Charger worked perfectly. But I want to make some trips where charging may be an issue. The southeast US is not over run with charging stations. I know that will change but at 81 I don't have a lot of driving years left. but I'm not ahold and slow driver. Having raced and autocross for years, I drive my FE just like the Audi S3 I traded for it. I love the acceleration and never get left at a traffic light.

Normally, I might advise you to be patient as Tesla chargers will soon be available to us. At your age, you deserve some peace of mind. I have to say, though, Mom will be 90 in April and she still drives 30 minutes to my sister's house a few times a month. She's still quite able to manage behind the wheel. If you knew her, you wouldn't be surprised! Good luck to you. You'll get no "What? You want to drive an ICE car?" from me!
