I just received my new Mach E a few days ago.

I’m having an issue where sometimes the tailgate button (on the back of the car) unlocks the tailgate, but it only opens an inch or two. This usually happens when the vehicle hasn’t been touched in a while.

Using the double-click on the remote always opens the back tailgate perfectly, but for some reason… using the back button sometimes only STARTS the process of opening the tailgate, leaving me to have to either push the button a SECOND time to get it open, or force it open the rest of the way manually.

I’m obviously under warranty, so I’ll wait and see if this happens frequently or if it goes away. Has anyone had this issue before?

Again, it tends to happen when the car has been sitting for a while. When I’m back there constantly opening, closing, reopening, etc. it tends to work perfectly.

Make sure the power liftgate is enabled in the settings on the main screen. It will only unlatch if that setting is disabled.

I don’t think it’s a setting issue. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. I can stand at the back liftgate and hit the button and it will work fine; I close it and try to reopen and it fails.

Any other problems with the car like 12V battery drain messages?

Not that I know of. Where would I see such messages?

I honestly think it’s something wrong w the back button. Again, I never have a problem when opening it by the remote or from inside the car…but using the back button only works intermittently.

I have the same problem. For a year and a half, from time to time the tailgate doesn´t open and I must lift it manually (about 5%). My feeling is that it´s a bug software because it hapens when the car has been sitting for a while (like if a module is still sleeping and the car can´t remember the recorded high position).

Hi there! Will you send us a message with your VIN and your local Ford dealer? I can look into things on my end.

Has anyone figured out why this is happening? My 2023 is doing the same thing.

Mine does the same thing, I opened it manually all the way and held down the set button until I heard a beep, that’s how I believe it’s supposed to be set. It worked once, then right back to only opening a few inches. The app, key, and button inside all open it fully, it’s not a big deal but annoying.

+1 (2023 late Dec22 delivery) If I used the trunk more often than I currently do, this would annoy me to no end. I was "installing" a rear seat pet cover and it was easier to tighten the clasps around the rear seat headrests from the trunk. Like you and others, on use of the physical button on the latch, it only opened an inch or two...I can't recall if I pushed the button again or used the fob in my pocket instead.

Same potential issue here. Also a 2023 with Dec 22 delivery. Almost always only opens a little ways, then pushing the button a 2nd time opens it the rest of the way. I've been assuming there is some sensor or something that's deciding something (me...) is too close and will be hit, but who knows - though it doesn't make any beeps or noise that I assume it would in that case I guess.
