I got my Premium Mach E a couple weeks ago, and today notice a large crack growing up the windshield from the very bottom edge. There's no sign of a stone chip or anything (nor do I have any memory of hearing anything resembling one) that would have caused this, instead it looks more like it was a defect or got damaged during the install and the crack just grew enough now for me to notice it.

Anyone else have this happen? Or any idea what recourse I have? I'm obviously pretty unhappy about the idea of having to replace a windshield after 2 weeks of ownership for something that looks like was the fault of the manufacturer.

Thanks

It looks like a manufacturing defect to me so you should get it replaced via warranty, of course anything glass related can end up with a battle of wills over something hitting it :(, but seeing as it comes from the bottom so has the wiper blades covering that area and no signs of external impact they should replace it for you as hard for it to be argued as the result of an impact.

Looks like impact damage just above the wiper blade. Something is there ? A better photo would help.

That's just me smudging it trying to get a better idea of where the crack goes against the black. Hard to get the camera to focus on it.

Put a object on the glass by the crack and focus on the object .

The problem is the blackness behind it. It's not hard to get the crack to show up on the part where it's open behind it, but once you get to the black part I can't get it to show well (too much light reflects, to little is too little to see anything).

But pulling the wiper blades up, the crack goes all the way to the edge of the windshield. It seems pretty clear it started there.

Ultimately, it doesn't matter what we think. Take it to the dealer.
I understand. I was posting to see if this was a known issue others were having (I've seen posts about misaligned roofs causing cracks, etc..). I have a call in to the dealer already.

Thanks for the responses.

Looks like a stress crack coming from the wiper blade assembly fitting area.

I agree. My friend who works in glass repair agrees. Ford refuses to cover it. And it's been 3 weeks and dealer still can't find a replacement windshield, so the crack is 3/4 of the way up the windshield at this point.

I so regret buying a Ford at this point.

Have you tried Safelite? Other forum users have had them replace windshields damaged by road debris and it only took a few days to get the glass.

Unfortunately, the way the warranty is written......the dealership is instructed to check for signs of an impact. If found, then the owner has to file a claim with their insurance company. If no signs of impact then Ford will cover under warranty. It doesn't really matter that we think or our friends think, it only matters what the dealership thinks.

I had my windshield crack like that on the 3rd day. Took 3 1/2 weeks for the windshield to arrive.
In my case there was a fairly obvious point of impact. I didn't really notice it at first but the dealership point it out to me and now I see it more clearly.
:(

Your cracked windshield looks identical to mine - twice! The first time my windshield cracked was in October right before the recall was issued. I took it back to the dealer and they did the ballpoint pen test and declared it was due to an impact even though the car was literally parked in the driveway when the crack began. I started the car, heard a "pop" and the windshield cracked...exact same spot as yours...bottom edge of the windshield under the passenger wiper blade. I decided to not submit an insurance claim and to wait it out since the recall would be issued soon and they would have to fix it anyway. I dropped off the car on January 11th to have the recall completed and picked it up from the dealership on January 22nd with a brand new windshield.

On March 22nd , the exact same thing occurred with the "pop" and crack in the windshield. It starts from the very same spot under the wiper and travels up the windshield. I've called the dealership multiple times and left messages with the Service Dept. Manager. I have yet to get a call back but I'm sure we will go through the same test and Ford won't honor the warranty. I have a hard time accepting these are all coincidences....there is most certainly something wrong with the design or installation!

I'm at a point now where I am considering selling the car. It's an absolute shame because I love this car! I have no other complaints but I know I can't afford to replace my windshield every two months.

The same spot would be more than a coincidence. Any intelligent service advisor would know this, but I guess you gotta find one of those.
