I ran my car down to 43% battery charge so I could take it to the Electrify America charger at the KOP mall and see if it’s affected by the bug that bricks cars (spoiler alert: it’s not).
When I drove up, there was a White Select charging at one of the stations. Two stations were displaying “out of service” (or a message to that effect).
I pulled up to an open charger and plugged my car in, after about a minute of negotiation, the charger recognized my car, said the session was started, then almost immediately displayed a message that the session was interrupted and that I should unplug my car and try again. I did so, and got the same result.
At that point, the lady charging her Mustang got out of her car, so I politely asked her if there was any “magic”. She explained that she never used plug and charge. She used her EA account. I asked her about FordPass and her response was that FordPass lies (she was not happy with FordPass). She suggested that I try another charger and I said I’d try her charger after she left. I also asked her how she liked her Mustang and she responded without hesitation that she loved it!
After she left, I pulled into the charger she was using, plugged my car in and, after some negotiation, it started charging. It went from 43% charged to 80% charged in 24 minutes. I was disappointed that it never charged faster than 87 KWh. The moment it hit 80%, it dropped to 11 KWh as others have reported.
One major design flaw - the cover for the high-voltage pins should be spring-loaded or something so that it automatically snaps closed when the charger is removed. I tried closing my charge port door without closing that cover first, and it took me a second to remember why it wasn’t closing. I can see people trying to close the charger door “enthusiastically” and being disappointed with the results.
Oh, the lady really liked Infinite Blue ?
