Hyundai is going to mop the floor with Ford and if a future government cuts tariffs on the Chinese manufacturers, it’s game over.

our auto industry is so far behind and doing its best to fall further behind

Huh. This move actually seems to make a lot of sense for a heavy/towing truck. Unless and until battery tech takes the next big leap forward, delivering significantly more range at a lower price point and charging duration, hybrid tech is really the minimum for a big ass truck like the F150. If I was in the market for a truck that can do actual truck things, I’d for sure consider this.

If you could recharge a Lightning from 10-80 in 18 minutes like a Kia/Hyundai/Lucid then towing/road tripping becomes less of a sticking point. Ford is getting left behind in tech. They will adapt or go the way of Palm when the iPhone came out, technology always moves forward. Never bet against technology, it is undefeated....

I'll line up to be first say "told you so" to Ford... or what ever buys what's left of Ford at auction in 2035. There will be no recovery from doubling down on gas... The development cycles are too long to switch back to electric. The current administration will be gone in 2.5 years... what exactly do you think the Dems are gonna do if/when they win? Ford will have spent all their capital on ICE with nothing of substance available and nothing in the pipeline that is electric.

backing away from EVs ensures their products are unsaleable outside the US and Canada.

From an automotive perspective It's the 73 oil embargo lining up to happen all over again... but this time with global regulations and shifting consumer taste instead of gas shortages. They are gonna have a bunch of v8 trucks and nothing else...

Quick mental experiment... Since "nobody" wants those EV's why do we need tariffs on them? whadda ya say we take the tariffs off them... Say hellooo Xaiomi SU7! Cause what people want is a gas powered 3 row SUV.... right?...

This is disappointing news for me, and the majority of F-150 Lightning owners that don’t tow or need extreme range for road trips. A number of people want 100% electric and no gas ever.

Ideally Ford would offer a variety of powertrain options in the F-150 platform from full electric, to range extended, to hybrid, and full gas to meet everyone’s needs. The brilliance of the Lightning was sharing a very well established platform that many buyers were already familiar with. That made the decision to switch to EV easier for a lot of people.

Maybe a range-extended pickup would attract a new set of buyers, but if you want a full-size electric truck, that should remain an option. We also need the cheaper mass EVs for entry level buyers.

This. EREV has always made more sense for trucks; they made BEV pickups only because that's what the government was incentivizing (gas range > battery range = no tax credit). Great example of how government can sometimes impede real progress.

As for Hyundai, IMO they made a bet on BEVs because they can't seem to figure out how to make a gas engine that doesnt turn into glitter.

First Mach-E probably our last. App is limited can't adjust the heat, seat/steering wheel heat like most do on our 2024... So many bugs in Sync4a, can't close the trunk when in D, etc. Aside that the car is ok.

Hopefully the Chinese cars come to Canada soon.

I would expect a new, full BEV pickup will be announced next, on the new BEV platform. Something scaled down a bit from the F150, for truck buyers who don't tow or haul heavy. I can't imagine Ford completely abandoning the BEV pickup segment.

Charging time is only one part of the puzzle. So is range. If towing the boat to the lake drops your range to 100 miles, nobody is gonna give a crap about charging speed. Also, even using DCFC while towing is a huge pain. Again, fully electric is just dumb for anybody who actually wants to use their truck to do truck things.
