I'm currently on my third road trip with my GTPE (and I did a couple with my prior Select). From Columbus OH to Albany NY this time. Used ABRP with live data. 614 miles in about 11 hours and 20 minutes. About 90 minutes of that was charging.

I arrived one hour and four minutes later than ABRP estimated, and oh yeah, I left an hour late so that estimate was only four minutes off! Charging stops were at the exact locations it specified for about the same amount of time it predicted.

Knock on wood I've been able to charge at every station I've stopped at (I've had to replug a few times or switch to a different terminal) and my charging peaked at 159kWh according to the EA terminal.

I'm right there with you, zero regrets! I love road tripping with my EV, and having planned breaks and stops makes the drive much less stressful in my opinion. Great photos, a wide variety of elements there!

Thanks!

I'm curious about your ABRP settings. I found that ABRP is conservative in efficiency (even when I set it for an already-run trip), in charging speed (almost always lower than I actually get), and in total trip time (it usually estimates a longer trip time than I experience unless something really goes wrong).

My overall experience is that my road trips are between about 6% to 16% longer with the Mustang vs the Tacoma, but I'm far less tired when I arrive after driving the Mustang.

This was my first time using it with a live OBD connection. I think I just turned it on automatic wherever I could but will take a peek in the settings to see what it shows.

I agree with your estimates, I feel like it adds 10 - 15% from what we've done in our ICE cars when we've compared similar trips.

Ah, I don't have it connected to my OBD2 module. I'm using that with CarScanner to log all the things the data nerd in me wants to collect (and then ignore because I'm not paid to do my own hobby projects--sigh)...

I've only run ABRP for pre-trip planning and post-trip analysis.

I know many are ABRP fans, but I find Apple Maps adequate and very easy to use. I drove Milwaukee to Chicago today and Apple Maps continued to update estimated SoC on arrival throughout the trip, which is super helpful.

I'm not really a huge fan of ABRP. It's just...there.

Every time we've tried to use Apple Maps on my partner's iPhone it's hung, sent us in weird directions, or generally been super buggy. And this in the Mustang or any other vehicle. Whatever it's got going on, I no longer trust it.

I wish Google Maps were more EV aware.

But we generally don't plan our trips anymore. We look at PlugShare for the qualitative charger density. Based on that, we choose a route. On our way, who ever isn't driving looks at the built-in Nav for chargers on the edges of our estimated range (minus some qualitative buffer or choose based on when lunch or dinner time is), and then look up a potential charger in PlugShare to see if it's available and has decent comments. If so, we tell Google to navigate there and then at about 30 miles out punch that in as our destination in the built-in nav.

Nice, I like the camper part of the car
I need to figure out a bit better setup. There is a step between the seats and the cargo space and the seats don't lie flat. Fine for one night, but not good for more. At least not for me.

I am a pessimist by nature, so I feel compelled to use both ABRP (for initial mapping) and plugshare (for reviews and ratings of charge locations) to map out a trip with alternate charging locations in event of site failures. I prefer to plan ahead for the worst and hope for the best, although all the planning is probably not necessary.

My motto is: "Not only is the glass half empty, but the water is evaporating"

Oh, I'm a pessimist too. Not only is the water evaporating, it's probably got something in it that's bad for me.

But for one of our early road trips with the Mustang I planned everything to excruciating detail and it all went out the window because we left at a very different time than planned, the snow storm we expected was a lot bigger in the wastelands than I'd expected, we got hit with a wind storm in the Mojave, and on and on...

After that, I started moving away from over-planning my road trips.

On my road trip through NM, OK, TX, and AZ, I decided just to plan only the next stop and to be ready to adjust as necessary...my stress levels were much, much lower.

On our most recent road trip to northern CA, we planned our next stop while driving. We already knew the possible routes, so that helped.

My philosophy has become that it's all going to go wrong anyway, so might as well not create additional burden and stress by trying to make sure it goes a specific way. ;)

I agree with the occasional connectivity issues with Apple Maps. However, it won me over for a few reasons: 1) accurate arrival SoC estimate, 2) quality of the direction it gives (it’s really helpful to know which lane to be in), and 3) Siri voice commands actually works!

For example: three months ago we went on a 2.5 hour trip to rural Indiana to pick our puppy from the breeder’s farm. Ideally we would have charged on the way back, but didn’t want to stop for 30 minutes with a new dog. So we charged on the way there. I used both ABRP and Apple Maps to plan the trip and both recommended the same chargers. On the way back, Maps indicated that our arrival SoC would be 21% which is identical to the pre-trip plan. However, headwind was so strong that my efficiency dropped to 2.3 miles per kWh and Maps started revising arrival SoC pretty aggressively…down to single digits. So I asked my wife to look up DCFC options on PlugShare. She found a Hyundai dealer with a ChargePoint DCFC on the way and asked Siri to navigate to that store on the fly. Problem solved. It would have been nice for Maps to do that automatically, though. Maybe with iOS 17?

I know it works well for many people (or it wouldn't dominate!). Just have had bad luck with it. I'm looking forward to even better integration with both iOS and Android products in the future...

12v Inflatable mattress was the changemaker for us.
