I wanted to paint my AirPods Pro to match the Smurfmobile, and when I went to my local automotive paint supply shop, I quickly found that the smallest amount of paint I could purchase was going to be WAY more than I needed for just the one case. So,
I ordered up a F-150 Lightning fob for the remote frunk access, and set about figuring out how to open up the case so I could remove the buttons to keep from painting them. Fun fact: if you search “Ford Smart Key teardown” on YouTube, all that comes up is how to remove the back to replace the battery. The front and back of the case snap together, and if you’re careful you can pry them apart. If you are not careful, you can order a new fob body for about $15 from any number of suppliers (I got my Lightning key fob and a spare 5 button body from Car and truck remotes). They shipped quickly, and I would recommend them based on my experience.
I used 2 coats of primer (paint store helped me pick out the right one for my application), 3 coats of color to get it looking even, and 3 coats of clear to protect it all. I was going to paint the interior of the Mustang logo with the same color as the rest of the key, but I’m leaning toward renewing the black.
What do you think?
