This was my 4th Mustang. Bought it new and had it for 9 year. Was a nice car but, in reflection, I can say with certainty that driving a lot on the freeway with the top down definitely damages hearing.

My '99 was $17.5k (MSRP). 18 years/255k miles when I sold it, and still running. Two alternators and a fuel pump were the extent of my repairs in all that time. Easily the best car I've ever owned.

Which shows why it was such a success when introduced, imagine being able to buy a fun car like that for 25K today, we would all have one for weekends.
You can literally buy a new Mustang today much better equipped than anything Ford had in 1964. The price, just under $33,000, so, my question, you gonna buy one for your weekend car?

My ā€˜65 K code convertible was $3,300 new in sept ā€˜64.
Wish I still had it - 4 speed, 289/271 HP Shelby. In good shape it could bring around $100k.

It’s all relative though. ā€œAdjusted for inflationā€ is only half of the story.

Why? Because the ā€œaverage Americanā€ is waaaaaaay more wealthy than we were in 1964.

Sure, you could get a Mustang for $3300 back then. But that was HIGHER than the per capita income in 1964.

Today you could buy more than TWO Mustangs with our per capita income.

Even though the $33,000 Mustang today is higher than inflation compared to the $3300 Mustang back then, it’s way more affordable to the average person.

I lusted for the Mustang when I mustered out of the Army in May of '64. But that price was so far out of my finances after serving, that I just had to dream.

My '65 red mustang, me about to be fresh out of school, was $2250. Parking in NYC the last two weeks even then was hell. Driving across the country in the midst of the construction of the Interstate was great.
