Hello,

On the right side of the dashboard you see almost mini game showing the acceleration and it will tell you at times the energy was returned to the battery.

This screenshot doesn't show it in action since its parked, but you can see where it is placed on the right.

What is this part of the dashboard and is there a walkthrough of how it works? I've seen terms like the Brake Coach but there's nothing in the manual on this. It would be great to know so I can drive more efficiently

Thanks

Thanks, so it is the brake coach. Within the documentation is states "coaches you to brake in a manner that maximized the amount returned to the battery"

Do we know what the best practice is for this in theory? As an example, do you want to break as little as possible? Or at a certain time?

Apply the brake pedal as little as possible, and let the motor(s) slow you down as much as possible.

This will get you more power from the regenerative braking system, and reduce wear on the brake pads/rotors.

You can see the results displayed in the Brake Coach.

For myself, I do everything I can to avoid breaking. It's a pain to have to deal with repairs.

The Brake Coach is a separate thing. It is only available in Whisper and Engage mode and you have to switch it on somewhere in the vehicle settings or driver assistance (don't have a vehicle with me right now). When you use the brake coach it will tell you a percentage of energy recovered during braking to a full stop. It will pop up for a moment above the depiction of the car on the dash screen.

The power meter you are asking about is just a visual display of mow much power the car is using when you accelerate or just cruise (increasing in blue to the right) and how much power is regenerated during braking (decreasing in green to the left).

This makes sense, but what is confusing for me is how the engine slows down without actually using the break. If it slows down the engine on its own, doesn't it require more battery to speed back up again?

The motors also act as generators when you are moving forward, and you lift off the pedal.

Yes, you have to put in more energy to speed up again, and you still end up consuming more than you generate

No perpetual motion machine but it does increase your average M/kWh

Did your other cars not slow down when you take your foot off the throttle?
If you don’t want your EV to slow down when you release the throttle, put it in Whisper mode.

Wait until you try 1 pedal drive.

It took me a bit of time to get used to it, but now it’s all I use.

You don’t have to worry about the brake pedal or regeneration much . The car does it for you. If you try it, feathering the gas pedal works best for me. You will get the hang of it after awhile.

I don’t think about it anymore and just do it…

The most efficient driving style is the classic hyper-mile style. Go light on the acceleration and start slowing down well ahead of your stop. Drive like an overly cautious person.

The only wrinkles with an EV are that the acceleration is super fun so it’s hard to contain your exuberance and that the brakes or accelerator lift-off can return energy to your “fuel reserves.”

After 1.5 years with the EV, I just drive it how I want.

If you're not using 1 pedal drive, when you apply the brakes, it will regenerate and not actually use the friction brakes. You can notice this in the graphic you're referring to as it will go into the green section.

I have a '24 which still has a 'L' selector on the dial. I always drive in Engage with 'L' selected because it provides significant regen braking, sort of like One Pedal drive but not as aggressive. I often don't need to use my brakes, or when I do need to brake it's only the last 20 feet or so (literally walking speed, braking action only takes like 2 seconds).

I tried L early on, but it has to be re-engaged after reversing. Unbridle’s regen is very similar.

Yeah, there's that. And actually anytime you leave Drive, not just Reverse. I'll have to give Unbridled a try, see what it's like. Maybe I'll change my ways. 🙂
