I may be trading my 2021 Mach-E Premium extended battery in for a 2022 GT. I am confused about whether I am eligible for the federal tax credit. On the Ford website, it is listed as a small station wagon. From what I understand, the tax credit is for SUV's under $80,000 and other vehicles under $55,000. If it is considered a small station wagon and not an SUV, then it would not be eligible with a sticker price of $66,000+. Does anyone know what the federal government considers it as, a station wagon or SUV?
It is my understanding that the Mach e is considered a crossover, like a car, thus no worry about it being considered as an SUV.

You have it backwards.

If it was a car, and not an SUV, it would be an issue. It is an SUV, so no issue.

btw here is the relevant section from https://www.irs.gov/businesses/plug-in-electric-vehicle-credit-irc-30-and-irc-30d

Vehicles Purchased and Delivered between August 16, 2022 and December 31, 2022
If you purchase and take possession of a qualifying electric vehicle after August 16, 2022 and before January 1, 2023, aside from the final assembly requirement, the rules in effect before the enactment of the Inflation Reduction Act for the EV credit apply (including those involving the manufacturing caps on vehicles sold). If you entered into a written binding contract to purchase a new qualifying vehicle before August 16, 2022, see the rule above.
the "written binding contract" section (which probably does not apply to 99.999% of us) is mooted anyway, because the MME meets the north american assembly requirement.

if i remember right, ford had just hit the manufacturing cap but the reduction would not have taken effect in Q4 2022 anyway.

so if you take delivery of an MME of any trim (i don't think there is a way to configure one over $80k, but i could be wrong), in 2022, you can take the full $7500 tax credit when you file in april.

Here's what I can't figure out. I've searched everywhere for this circumstance and there's no way I'm the only one. Ordered 2022 MME Premium in February '22. It was converted in August to 2023..same trim etc. The vehicle is supposed to arrive at dealership on 12/31 (?). '23 does NOT show up for '23 tax credit eligibility in IRS table. The '22 does. Trying to figure out if we'll be able to take the tax credit for if it actually arrives on 12/31. Or, are we better off waiting until next week and hoping it makes the list before we file '23 taxes in '24. The challenge there is the $55k MSRP threshold, which the MME Premium exceeds. Anyone wrestling with this same scenario?

Historically speaking, it takes quite a while for the IRS to update that table that you're referencing. I don't remember the specifics, but I think it was months into 2021 before the '21 models showed as eligible.

Anyway, this doesn't fully address your concern but maybe it partially helps.

You’ll be fine. The 2023 will qualify either way (as long as you’re under the income cap next year). And the MME is classified as an SUV, so the MSRP limit is $80k.

The car is made in North America, specifically Mexico. Nothing to wonder about. Doesn't have to be on any list. Use the VIN decoder to prove that to yourself - https://afdc.energy.gov/laws/electric-vehicles-for-tax-credit#vin-decoder

Glad to hear it's a "small SUV".

My incoming '23 MME was last seen in KC, MO.

So happy IRS has suspended the battery mineral requirement for the first few months of 2023.

Glad to be able to take the full $7500 credit!

i think this really threw a lifeline to dealers - i had figured that come january there would be a ton of MMEs sitting on lots which were custom ordered and abandoned by customers due to the total or partial loss of the tax credit. at this point the only abandoned orders will likely be people who hit the income limit. i guess some people might not want to have to wait 16 months to collect the credit and bail.

will be interesting to see if tesla keeps up with the 7500 rebate into january. probably they think they don't need to with the return of the credit. but they really seem to be in deep doodoo right now.

I.m going to try to take the $7500.00 Tax Credit - but i'm sure i will be audited due to (2) Ford Dealerships monkey business - The dealer i bought my Mache E from said it was used with 200 miles, i said no way, they said, The buyer that ordered the car backed out, I said how could it be a used vehicle if it has only 200 miles on it ? They sold it to me without the Maroney Sticker, so i could not see the MSRP? , i found out later it had never been Licensed or Titled, to the person who ordered the Vehicle, or to any other Dealership. After a car fax report i found out it had been built in july 2022 - the warranty start date was august 21 2022 . ? Then i purchased it on September 24 2022 - Yet The dealer would not say why it was used, or where it came from, last week my Local Ford Dealership in Wa. state, printed out the Maroney Sticker for me & told me it came from Gresham Ford Originally then shipped to The Ford Dealership in Hood River, where i purchased the SUV - So My contract says - Used - yet i am the only titled owner of the vehicle since the build - And Wa. state does list the Mach E as a Sport Utility on the Title:) anyway im sure the (2) Dealership will both try to claim the $7500.00 Tax Credit yet the IRS rules state that you cannot claim the Credit if you purchased the vehicle for resale:) I called Ford Credit concerning this sale as a - Used car - ? they basically told me to -Take a Hike- & would not explain why it was not a New SUV :)or why it was considered a Used Vehicle LOL
Is it titled as new or used?

Since your paperwork said used and not new, you cannot claim the tax credit. People have fought this in the past and have lost.

In case you missed it, the IRS pulled the Federal Tax Credit lifeline for dealers (& consumers) right before the end of 2022 year for models priced above the basic Premium MSRP purchased in 2023:

yeah, i noticed. real bad for ford and anyone whose non-select model will be delivered in 2023.

hopefully the leasing loophole persists and ford starts passing the 7500 to consumers.

Unfortunately it doesn't appear to be classified as a small SUV. Snipped the below image from IRS page. 2023 Premium AWD ER will not qualify as MSRP is $67k. Even with the "private offer" for '22 to '23 conversion, my purchase price exceeds $55k (which doesn't matter - since IRS is basing on MSRP). I'm hoping Ford makes a case to have this vehicle adjusted to SUV. And as an update for our order, the expected delivery date pushed from 12/30/22 to 1/19/23. We'll now have to ponder if we truly want this 2nd MME. These vehicles are taking a beating in overall value. That said, I absolutely love my GTPE.
