This TSB has been superseded by TSB 23-2122.

This is a major update to TSB 22-2105 that adds much more detailed instructions for updating the GWM. This should improve dealer success rate with the updates. The related CSP 22P08 for the same issue was also updated recently and contains even more detailed instructions with photos.

This TSB does not apply to 2023 vehicles, they use a different updating process.

Some 2022 vehicles are still being delivered with outdated BlueCruise maps, as a result Hands-Free mode will not work. A manual gateway module (GWM) update at the dealer is required to update the maps and restore functionality. You can check the expiration date in your About SYNC, note the date format is DD-MM-YYY. As of this writing, the latest map version is 13-04-2023 (April 13th, 2023). After the GWM update, the BlueCruise maps will be updated automatically with checks every 10 ignition cycles.

Summary

This article supersedes TSB 22-2105 to update the vehicles affected, Issue, Action, and Service Procedure.
Issue: Some 2021-2022 F-150/Mach-E and 2022 Expedition/Navigator vehicles equipped with BlueCruise/ActiveGlide may experience loss of BlueCruise/ActiveGlide hands-free driving mode availability. This may be due to an expired BlueCruise/ActiveGlide map file in the gateway module (GWM). To correct the condition, follow the Service Procedure to update the GWM.
Action: Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition on vehicles that meet all of the following criteria:

• One of the following vehicles:
- 2021-2022 F-150/Mustang Mach-E
- 2022 Expedition/Navigator

• BlueCruise/ActiveGlide hands-free driving mode is no longer available

Warranty Status: Eligible under provisions of New Vehicle Limited Warranty (NVLW)/Service Part Warranty (SPW)/Special Service Part (SSP)/Extended Service Plan (ESP) coverage. Limits/policies/prior approvals are not altered by a TSB. NVLW/SPW/SSP/ESP coverage limits are determined by the identified causal part and verified using the OASIS part coverage tool.

Service Procedure
NOTE: This procedure will not enable hands-free driving mode on vehicles that did not previously have the capability.
1. On the center display screen, navigate to Settings > About SYNC > Hands-Free Driving Mode available through DD-MM-YYYY. Is the expiration date in the past or is it blank?
NOTE: The date format is DD-MM-YYYY. Example: 02-04-2022 is for 02-Apr-2022.
(1). Yes - proceed to Step 2.
(2). No - this article does not apply. Refer to Workshop Manual, Section 419-03B for normal diagnostics.
2. Connect a battery charger to the vehicle's 12v battery. Set the charger to maintain the battery at 12.6-13.6 volts.
3. Close all the doors on the vehicle. If a door must be left open during the service procedure, mechanically latch the door latch to simulate a closed door.
4. Perform the Module Software Updating Procedure outlined below for the GWM.
5. Confirm that the hands-free driving mode expiration date is updated to a future date.
Module Software Updating Procedure
NOTE: The following instructions apply when performing a software update on any of the following modules: GWM, TCU, APIM and IPC.
NOTE: A blank 64GB or larger universal serial bus (USB) flash drive is required, and a USB 3.0 USB flash drive is recommended for fastest software installation. Make sure the USB flash drive being used is formatted as exFAT file system. To confirm the USB flash drive is formatted as exFAT, hold down the Windows icon keyboard key and press the E keyboard key. Right click on the USB flash drive, then select Properties. If File System under the General tab is not exFAT, the drive must be formatted. To format the USB flash drive, right click on the USB flash drive, select Format, select exFAT for the File System, and select Default Allocation Size for the Allocation Unit Size. De-selecting Quick Format is not necessary and results in a more lengthy operation.
1. Using the FDRS, begin module programming by selecting the SW Updates tab then download and run the application for desired module. Follow all on-screen instructions carefully.
2. When prompted, connect the USB flash drive to the FDRS.
NOTE: It may take up to 5 minutes for the vehicle to recognize the USB flash drive.
3. When prompted by the FDRS, safely remove/eject the USB flash drive from the diagnostic scan tool and connect it to the USB hub to install the software into the module. When the USB software update begins the SYNC screen displays a message stating Do Not Remove USB. The update starts automatically, and may take 10 minutes or longer to complete. If the message stating Do Not Remove USB does not display on the center display screen within 5 minutes of the USB drive being connected to the vehicle’s USB hub select Did The Update Install Successfully > No on the FDRS and follow the on-screen instructions to either attempt USB programming again or perform controller area network (CAN) programming for the module.
4. When the pop-up stating Restart Required appears on the center display screen, turn the ignition OFF and open the driver’s door for 10 minutes then close the door and restart the engine. The update is still in process at this time.
5. Once the pop-up stating Update Successful appears in the center display screen, select Close, remove the USB flash drive from the USB hub and connect it to the FDRS, and select Yes on FDRS indicating the update installed successfully. This initiates the remaining automated configuration steps and reports the module assembly, vehicle interface processor (VIP), calibration, customer interface processor (CIP), and application software levels to the Ford online database. Failure to follow this step results in an inaccurate database as well as omitted, improperly installed, or improperly configured applications (features) such as navigation (if equipped). It is normal for the module to reset during this step.

For anyone who has expired maps (based on About Sync expiration date), has following these steps restored hands-free bluecruise/activeglide? I'm taking my vehicle to the dealer January 9, since I am operating on expired maps. I'm looking for validation that performing the TSB steps fix the problem.

i have a 2023 MME for which the maps have the Dec 10 2022 expiry date. at this point i think i've done 10 key cycles, but there is no update to the map. (does this show up in the software updates, or does it just happen silently?)

is it expected that 2023 models will need service dept. intervention to load the new bluecruise maps?

Same issue. 2023 car delivered with outdated maps; BlueCruise doesn’t work.

for me, just hands free does not work. i was able to engage cruise control and even automatic lane changes but it wants me to keep my hands on the wheel.

Same here. Picked my my 2022 premium on Wednesday and will give it until Monday to self resolve. If no OTA, then I’ll go back to the dealer.

Job 1 MME (June '21) and I've never had HFBC work. Long version:
1. BC OTA updates started coming through last spring. 2.8.1 failed and never reinitiated.
2. I brought the car in in September to have 21G01 performed. It turns out I needed my IPMA replaced and then the updates were installed.
3. Just prior in August my wife backed into a parked car which caused some minor damage and damaged the cross traffic sensor. Those repairs were completed this month.

All sensor faults are gone, connected services shows BC active through 11/4/23, but BCHF fails to activate.

Ford customer service says I should take it in to have TSB 22-2494 performed. @Mach-Lee do you think this could be correct or think my issues may be unrelated?

Exactly the same symptoms for me. Hands-free has not worked since I picked my 22 CR1 up 2 weeks ago. The date shows as 10-12-2022, (December 10, 2022).

I called Ford and talked to a tech guy. He said that I needed OTA map update 3.5.2, which he was going to write up and get it expedited somehow. That was earlier this week, but so far no update.

I'd rather go that route if it's going to fix the problem rather than take it to the dealer. I'm not sure which option is better though lol.

well, this is "good" in the sense that it sounds like a lot of new 2023 owners are in the same boat, so hopefully ford will fix it.

for me, i have to go into the dealer anyway due to this (seemingly partial) failure of the TCU module in my car. i'm going to ask them to apply the map update and the 4.1.2 sync update as well. i think because of the way this has failed no OTA update will ever happen for me until it is replaced.

Thanks for posting this! Just drove home in a new '22 (built in October) and I'm experiencing this issue exactly (maps expired 12-10-22 and hands-free doesn't activate).

Kind of annoyed that I need to take it back to the dealer, though, as they are two hours away. Especially as I asked the sales person if they could do a software update before I brought it home and I was brushed off. :(

Same symptoms as you on my Mach-E that I picked up on Saturday. I first tried the online Chat with Sync support, and they were unable to help but referred me to the technology support group (I think they called it Advanced Technology support?) The contact information I used, in case anyone needs it:

833-389-0848
8:00 a.m. -11:00 p.m. EST (Monday-Friday)
8:00 a.m. -8:00 p.m. EST (Saturday)

The person I spoke with was helpful, and said she would send my VIN to an engineering team (closed today due to holidays) to add to a list of cars that need an update forced. She warned that they might be backed up due to the holidays, and that I should wait several days. I also received some detailed steps to take but which basically boil down to making sure the car is "fully on" for at least 30 minutes at a time in order to receive an update.

If they can fix this remotely that would be ideal. I suppose if this fix fails, then the next step is to take to the service center to have the TSB mentioned by OP executed.

I took my car to the dealer and they were unable to resolve the out dated maps. They wanted to take apart the interior to access and test a module. They don’t have loaners and I need my car, so I declined as this process would take several days if they also needed to order a part. I’ll call the technology team tomorrow because I’m skeptical it is a hardware issue. Ford Pass can communicate with my car, so the modem works. If it ends up being hardware, I will return to dealer when it’s more convenient to be without a car.

Yes, the engineers have been on holiday break and all OTAs and fixes have been on hold. They return tomorrow. Yes you need to wait a week or two and see what happens.

Do not let those idiots tear your car apart, this is not a hardware issue. You need to be patient and wait for the update to come to your car or a solution specific to 2023s. I don't care what Ford customer service tells you on the phone, updates are on hold at the moment. Please wait until Jan 15th before doing anything further.
