Thanks @timbop. It burns my britches when people disparage Ford and Ford Credit without knowing the facts. 91% of you on here don't know what is happening behind the scenes. Once people see what financing programs are available at the time of delivery, then they can informedly complain.
I have no reason to doubt that Ford will make a traditional leasing program available to owners, it's just a sound business decision. The Ford Options program was just that, an option for those who want a guaranteed tax credit to obtain one while retaining a lease like program. The cars aren't even en route to real customers yet. If we all put on our pre-pandemic patience hats, I believe we'll see additional purchasing options, such as a traditional lease, materialize in the future.

However, if for some reason it did matter I'd take the credit for tax year 2020 regardless of whether I picked the car up on December 31 or January 1. No one will tell you to do that but there is no downside. All this fretting about when the MME arrives is much ado about nothing.

The IRS form asks when the vehicle was put into service. Probably not a good idea to falsify this information.

Like I said before Iā€™m happy to hear there may be more options. It shows Ford is trying to be consumer friendly.

I guess my main hangup is the timing of these announcements. Finding out what financing programs are available ā€œat the time of deliveryā€ is problematic because, for some, the potential delivery window currently straddles January 1. For me, at least, one day on either side of that will mean a very different direction for the financing.

If these programs go public by say December 1 then no problem. If itā€™s slips into mid December that puts some of us in a crunch.
Unlike some EV makers. Ford has chosen to not willy nilly promise where it canā€™t be sure it can deliver.

You canā€™t have that information now. Probably it will be available when they said it would beā€”soon. The people with the money and the responsibility are making decisions. The world is in fā€™ing turmoil. Who knows where we will be in a month or two. Everyone needs to start acting like adults for once. Plan for both alternatives or neither, but stop whining .

This leads to the always pertinent question: And then what? That's a serious question.

Same thing that happens if you claim any other deductions that you are not entitled to. You could get away with it, or if you get audited you will have problems.

This article highlights some of the negatives of Ford's approach to not allowing leasing on Mach E.

Ford Won't Let You Lease The Mustang Mach-E

" Unlike almost every EV on the market, our analysis finds that consumers will be unable to lease the Mach-E."

Let's go with the fact. First, this is a credit not a deduction. Second, you are entitled to the credit. The question is what year you are entitled to it. Third, a questioned credit is most definitely not an audit.

So let's keep going. In 2022 you get a letter questioning the credit. Then what?

Yes but: that article is almost two months old. The new article has no mention of the possibility of a lease.

Not sure if it's been asked before, but I assume options will have a mileage overage fee. Any idea what that may be? I think it's usually around 0.25/mile on leases? (Also not sure if it changes based on location/etc)

Yes. Options is $0.25 per mile overage (only applicable if you return the vehicle to Ford Credit, not if you trade it in or refinance/payoff the balloon at the end of your term).

Head over to VW Credit. Those efficient Germans have managed to pull it off.

VW Credit has been able to create a lease and they've been able to be transparent and share the info with would-be buyers at least 4 months before the car is released.

VW Credit has also been able to advertise the actual details of the lease.

VW Credit also spells out in writing that the $7500 Federal credit goes 100% into the lease.
