I'm wondering what the increase in efficiency would be on our Premium AWD if we went from the OEM 19" wheels to, say, CR-1 18" wheels. Does anybody have any data on this topic?

I'm well aware of the EPA stats that the CR-1 model w/18" wheels, Extended Range and AWD has a listed range of 312 while that of the Premium is 277. That's a big difference in efficiency. Thanks in advance for your replies and hopefully data.

My CR1 easily gets 300 miles on the highway at 70-75mph. Those wheels also have the aero covers to reduce drag. Because the tires are taller, the ride is likely better also on rough roads.

Considering there's almost no functional differences affecting range between the Premium ER AWD and the CR1 AWD besides the wheels...

That's what I'm thinking but it would be nice to have some confirmation from an owner of a Premium AWD who's made this switch.

Any thoughts about where to get 18" wheels?

Not sure this helps you, but I upgraded my GT to GTPE wheels and then swapped my GT wheels for CR1's. You can find Select 18" and Premium 19" wheels all over ebay, but the CR1s are less common. I haven't had a chance to do efficiency comparisons, but I will.

Thanks. Yes, please do post here when you've made that comparison in efficiency.

Wait, I'm confused. You're going to fit CR1 wheels on a GT? Will they fit over the brake rotors up front?

Will say this: I do like my CR1's ride on rough roads thanks to the tall tires.

Running aftermarket spoked wheels and wider (same height) Michelin snow tires currently and I'm sure I've lost some range but not as much as I expected, and it's hard to parse out how much range is lost due to cold weather vs. tire width vs. snow tread vs. spoked wheels. Surprisingly little increase in tread noise, and more sure-footed in the cold and on slush/snow/ice though which is why I made the switch. Stock wheels/tires are in the attic waiting for spring.

Sorry to veer off-topic!

Yep only the GTPE has the larger rotors.

I bought a set of CR1 wheels off ebay and can confirm my Premium AWD performs like a CR1 on highway range. I have posted about it before

Rotors aren’t the issue, the calipers are. GT calipers are smaller than the GTPE calipers. The GT has the same Brembo sourced calipers as the Select and Premium MMEs, they’re just painted red.

Regular GT has the same calipers as the premium and select should fit fine. GTPE has larger front rotors and calipers but I have read a few threads that an 18" wheel fits but is very close. Probably the wheel design is the factor in if it would fit or not.

Just started a 2500mi road trip and figured this was as good of a time as any to try out the CR1 wheels. More to follow.

Thanks. Can I ask how you scored the wheels?
