The manual says to cool down the battery for 2-3 hours before charging at home daily.. anyone know how to do this?

The manual says "With Charge Scheduling you can improve the high voltage battery's longevity by delaying the start of charging and setting a maximum charging limit. It is recommended to set your preferred charging times to be at least 2-3 hours after your typical plug in time. This allows the battery to cool before charging begins. Additionally, setting the maximum charge level to 90% for everyday usage reduces strain on the battery. "

I am new to the EV world and just got my MME 2 months ago. I am curious how everyone goes about this. I don't see a way to do this really. I guess I can pick a time at night to schedule to start charging? I also work from home since forever and randomly use my car more for fun and groceries.

Ignore that, it’s copy/paste from the hybrid manuals. Mach-E battery doesn’t get hot while driving compared to a Cmax hybrid.

You can charge immediately at home, although it may be a peak time on the electric grid.

It’s usually best to set your car to charge at night unless you have solar.

I'm probably being lazy but I just plug mine in before going to bed. That way it has been in the garage for several hours before it starts to charge. I'm mainly in that habit in case I have to go somewhere in the evening.

When I get home I plug in to the L2 charger. If the car needs to cool itself, the front vents will open, and the fans start cooling. My charging schedule is set to charge to 90%, starting at midnight.

FYI, I don't think that's the battery cooling unless you hear the A/C compressor kick in. The fans running when you plug in immediately after a drive is to cool down the motor electronics loop, not the battery. So the charger doesn't get too hot. Usually the fans will only run for a minute or two. You're in Canada so I doubt you're ever going to get the battery hot enough to cool unless DC charging.

I'm in a lower rate overnight so I just charge at night. It's surprising how many people that own or rent EVs that don't know the charging rules. On my last road trip I ran into someone with an EV work van charging. As expected it dropped down to only 20kw once he reached 80% and he apparently had no idea it would do that. He also didn't know about the 90% rule. Some modern cell phones follow these charging rules too if you plug them in the same time everyday and will slow charge the last 20%. I'm super interested in how the industry is going to change once we get solid state batteries. We might all be working towards having our batteries last 10/15 years but we might want to swap them out long before that if the rest of the car lasts that long. Should be interesting next half decade or so.

I asked this same question a long time back here and was also told not to worry and just plug in whenever. This copy/paste angle is new. I'm not sure how you know that, but I really appreciate the added explanation. I hope Ford can spend a little effort and get the manual updated to confirm what you say and save more owners from asking this same question repeatedly.

I plug in as soon as I get outta the car. I do cap at 90% though.
