I’m about to pull the trigger on a level 2 charger. I have a 2023 premium standard range battery. How many amps should I set the charger for? How many amps does the portable charger provide?

You need to set the charger amperage based on the breaker that protects the circuit. The MME can use up to 48A, which requires a 60A breaker.

Ok, I have a 60 amp breaker. Will it charge faster than the portable charger that came with the car?

Very cool. My portable I have been using since we bought the car new in July has started turning orange. I’ve been able to reset it and blue twice in a week. I’m not confident it will last plugged in all the time.

The Ford Mobile charger is 32 amp and not adjustable.
https://www.ford.com/support/how-to...-charging/what-is-the-ford-mobile-power-cord/

Reality is theres a few things going against you for a wall mounted charger at this time. There's an issue with the charge port, it's causing EVSE's to derate to sub 40amps. This currently isn't getting fixed.

There's also a matter of heat and waste. The higher charge you run into the car the more heat (read: fans running in the summer in your garage turning it into a sauna) and wasted electricity because of the heat, the fans, pumps and EVSE efficiency go down. Charging around 32 amps usually keeps the fans off or mostly off. This saves you a few pennies a day in power costs, and possibly more if your sauna heats up the house, which triggers your AC to run more.

Get an adjustable on the fly charger (the Emporia was just on sale for $300). I bump mine down in the summer, and probably raise it in the winter if I need to ram some power in for a trip somewhere on a couple hours notice. I thought my Tesla WallConnector was adjustable on the fly but it's not, so it's in a box for some new owner to take off my hands. I have a thread on On the Fly adjustable chargers here.

I installed a 60A breaker and 48A capable charger, but after running it for a while I backed down the charger to 32A. I noticed that the thermal system on the car runs less at a 32A rate and the garage stays a bit cooler. Where I live, I don’t need or want the extra heat. It charges overnight, so I don’t notice that it finishes quicker.

Ok, good to know. I live in Florida so heat may be of concern in summer.

But go bigger than 32. Unless it'll cost you a fortune to wire. You'll need 4 or 6 awg wire for 50+ amp breaker. If 32 amp charge, 40amp breaker. 40 amp charge 50 amp breaker, 48 charge, 60amp breaker.
Depending on how far away the box is from your EVSE you have to up the size of the wire. Bigger the wire more $ and the more electricians like to charge.

Yeah, it’s already wired for #6 Awg. The outlet is about 5 feet away from the outlet and the outlet another 4 feet away from the car.

Geeze. I don’t know grammatical sentences! 5 feet from breaker box to outlet and about another 4 feet from outlet to car.

32A is plenty if you've already got the infrastructure.

If you're putting something in, I'd put in a 48A charger on a 60A circuit.

I have 2 EVs and alternate a single 32A cable between them to charge them both. No issues. That's only because I already had an outlet in my garage. I'd rather spend $0 and get 32A charging than spend >$0 for more charging speed. I get about 30mi/hr (Tesla, but Ford won't be far off).
