I keep my car in my locked garage in the middle of my 25 acre home. My German Shepherd sleeps next to the MME. My insurance company should pay for the dog food. It looks like a typical urban problem that I don't worry about here.
Ironically, you probably have no idea how entitled and pompous you sound.

Here in Germany EVs do not get stolen that often due to range fear. If you have an ICE you stop at the station and fill the tank within 5 minutes and take of again, with an EV you have to wait quite some time.
First positive thing I've heard about range anxiety. :)

Well, at least that's what was stated in the vehicle theft statistics for Germany.
Can't tell whether it is true or not.
It's best to just believe in it until it hits you

First off, stop blaming Ford. Second, hide an air tag in your cars. Inexpensive tracking option
I don’t quite think everyone is blaming Ford. Merely pointing out a missed opportunity.

Insurance companies do not want to take on some cheaper Hyundai and Kia because of the lack of an “immobilizer” in their gasoline cars. Do you see the issue here? I’m sure you do.

Tracker in car will get you the location. Sure. I agree with you on the potential effectiveness.

But it’s not of much help here if the system is broken to the core and there’s shortage of law enforcement officers. And I think we all value our lives more than chasing a ring of criminals who do this for a living, yes?

Wouldn’t a simple 4-6 digit passcode to drive add a solid layer of protection against such incidents, like Tesla does?
With Teslas you have 2FA and need the Tesla password to disconnect the phone / account from the car.

It's basically impossible to steal a Tesla unless you flat bed it and chop it up immediately. The car is constantly sending position and telemetry to Tesla HQ - which is why as soon as something like a motor fails it reports to HQ and service knows exactly what is wrong when you visit a service center.

Somebody else (from Toronto?) had their MME stolen back in 2021 and the thieves immediately disconnected FordPass and you can't track the car anymore.

Both. I think the key was close enough to the car. Then they master reset it and took off. Why doesn't Ford use 2FA?
Ford doesn't seem to use 2FA on Sync even with other Ford vehicles(i.e my Bronco) but weirdly you can enable 2FA or Okta for the FordPass finance/web account - which I did and it is kinda annoying to have to enter the code every time I want to check my Ford Options balance... but that's security for you.

Oh they do, only on Ford credit site. You know, to keep others from paying your loans. ?

I keep my key fobs in a Faraday box. For < $20 on Amazon it will keep thieves from using a device to unlock your car without the fob.

I agree with others here that it's unacceptable that @Ford Motor Company doesn't add 2FA or other measures to prevent thieves from disabling FordPass.

The same people who can mimic your car fob can scan for air tags.

We are looking for prevention rather than “find your car after they steal it.”

Wouldn’t you rather they don’t steal it in the first place?

I'm definitely not blaming Ford for this, just a simple question, if you go through the lengths to have an app attached, why not 2FA, it wouldnt necessarily stop every theft, but if they couldn't master reset, then they probably wouldn't try.

Ford has a stolen car line. I called it they couldn't do anything without a police report. Those of us who live here and around will tell you OPD will never come out or respond to non emergencies. So after my car was stolen, I had to go to the police station to get a report. Ford has all the info, but will only work with local law enforcement to track, I imagine that's so they don't get sued when loss of life happens from confronting criminals who stole your car.

If I get it back, great, if I don't, I'll take my insurance money. I'm pretty sad, and I feel violated by this. I loved my car.

Bought these for my Fobs. Link Better than nothing I suppose. If theft is an issue would GAP insurance help make up the difference if the car still has a lien on it?

I have a rant about blaming DAs for police incompetence, but this isn't a politics board. Noted.

As a fellow bay area cyber orange owner, I will certainly BOLO. There's a surprisingly large number of us, I've seen maybe 6 in the last year since getting mine, haven't seen your plates. I'm on the peninsula where they have license plate scanners, I'm sure anyone sophisticated enough to use a cloner would avoid locations with scanners.

Sounds like Ford should stop its restriction of working only with law enforcement. You'd have your car located and maybe back by now. It might even be in a jurisdiction with an active police force like we have in the suburban peninsula.

Sounds like Master reset (whatever they applied to unlink your car) needs its own password. In a perfect world, it would use standard 2FA authenticator app. Or have the same protection (both fobs?). Not going to hold my breath on that one, but maybe the subsequent cars will have better.

Sounds like the operative theory is fob cloning. I'll go put my second fob back in the faraday bag, the bags come in two-packs and I've just been lazy about putting it away. Thanks for the note about the fob always pinging: I think I noticed the fob in the pouch drained battery really fast. I might just unbattery them too. If it really does always ping, you can "war drive" in a neighborhood, probably with a Flipper, until you see a fob pinging, the rest would be cake. Which would especially be a thing in neighborhoods like mine with extremely high EV takeup rates, Oakland exports trends.

Thank you for the heads up, sorry for your loss, and good luck
